Your Worst AI Experiences

In a recent end game when all meaningful rivals had been throttled and Mars was only a few turns away, I had the AI Civs asking for a gift. Being charitable I offered to give them a luxury (a spare copy), but not any money. This is always turned down i.e. luxuries + cash they will accept, luxuries on their own and they say no. That's just nonsense, why would any player turn down something for nothing?

The failing of the AI diplomacy shows in how pretty much every time all the AI civs end up hating eachother pretty fast.

I hate this. They always ask for a huge amount of gold and a luxury. I eliminate the gold and I'm willing to give them a luxury and they don't want it. I'm not going to give away that much gold, but I don't mind giving away an excess luxury.

You've had some weird games. The strangest I've had was(and is, because it"s the usual) someone complaining about my "forward settling"(allthough had been building my cities a good distance away from others) while the AI is literally expanding right into my face. Another one is those religious units they send to convert my cities and when I destroy them within my own cultural borders they complain about me trying to spread my religion to their cities. I quess even defending an attack is warmongering to the AI. Sometimes they attack my units and at the same turn ask for a peace treaty.

Happened again today with Spain i.e. declared on me and never showed up. No worries as I was busy pounding Germany at the time anyway :)

In hindsight, maybe Firaxis should fix a few mechanics where declaring war not only depended on whether they like you or not, but also on whether your army was ready for war (or if you even had an army).

The Viking guy was fine with me for several thousand years while I was landlocked. The turn after I conquered a coastal city he denounces me for having a weak navy.

I beat 7 of those frightening congolese unique swordsmen - in the jungle - with 3 spearman, an archer, and an anceint walled city. He gave me everything he had in the peace deal, even though i bpnever set foot in his lands.

AI: *moves exactly one warrior near my borders 15 turns into the game*
me: oh great here it comes
AI: *declares war, runs warrior around aimlessly, asks for peace + gives me a bunch of money 10 turns later*

every other game. i wish they'd fix this nonsense, it's probably one of the most ubiquitous and immersion-breaking AI behaviours and it's been here since the launch. at what point is it ever beneficial to declare war on somebody and attack them with one unit? why is this a thing?

The main circumstances in which a human would do so would be an unescorted settler / builder. But the human would be sure to wait to DOW until he could take that unescorted civilian the same turn.
Another is some humans DOW the AI with no troops near the AI simply to instakill its religious units within the human's territory with military units instead of using Inquisitors.

I just had a pretty good AI experience yesterday. Started playing as Gorgo and while my 2 warriors were out exploring only 20 turns in, Trajan comes along with a scout, and a couple of turns later 4 warriors, a slinger and a declaration of war. I hastily built a slinger and pulled my warriors back to Sparta, but the game was over 3 turns later. Granted, that was with the AI+ mod, but it was the first time in Civ 6 that the AI took me unawares (obviously in future I won't be neglecting my defences).

i mean yeah, i understand why a human would do it, but i more meant declaring war with the intent to eliminate as the AI does, since unless i'm missing out on a whole branch of code the AI never declares war to steal workers

I'm not sure if this counts as an AI issue or not, but in my current game I declared war with the Vikings because they captured a city state that I was Suzerain of. First, I think it is weird that I have to incur warmonger penalties to defend a city state that I am the sworn protector of, but whatever. The issue is that right before I was about to recapture and free the city state, the vikings offer me peace and the city. I accept, why shed more needless virtual blood to accomplish my goal. Except... now I don't get the option of reinstalling the city state. I have to reload the turn and actually take the city, free it, then declare peace.

Pretty stupid design in my opinion, on multiple fronts.

Edit: Add to this, the very next turn after freeing the city state, I lose Suzerain status to America. Your welcome for liberating your city.

Yeah City-state politics are totally Moderator Action: <snip> , you should be able to have a Cassus Beli to take back a city state you were suzerain of without diplomatic penalties, and you should be rewarded for that.
I know there is something much later, but most of the city-states get taken out pretty quickly

Right, so, I don't know if people have single bad experiences with the AI to share or just overall disappointment, but I thought I'd celebrate my signing up with a thread.

So, if you have bad AI experiences to share, go ahead.

Mine:
I'm attacking Japan's city with two swordmen, a knight, a crossbowman and a catapult. The swordmen are getting old and are pretty useless, any attack by them is a major defeat, they're pretty much just sitting there. Without Japanese reinforcements, it's only a matter of time before I grind the city down.

Then, oh no... a Samurai is produced in the city. Suddenly the city seems to stand a chance, if the Samurai - together with the city's defences - can kill one or two of my partly-damaged units. What does the Samurai do? It backs away. Okay, maybe it's going round the single mountain tile next to the city to attack from the side. No. It simply backs away and disappears into other parts of Japan's territory. I never see it again. A couple of turns later I take the city. I feel no satisfaction, only disappointment. How are we expected to enjoy a video game if the AI is this bad?

A simple "attack enemy on-sight whenever possible" programming would be better than this crap.

Disclaimer: I'm only a couple of weeks and a few games into my Civ6 experience, probably don't know everything there is to know about the game.

Anyway, share your disappointing AI experiences if you feel like it.
I just chance on seeing this thread, and maybe it's good to share some AI experience.
But mine is not quite a bad one.
I have seen a scout killing a very weak AI barbarian horseman, I don't know if that is reasonable. I have never seen an AI Warrior killing a Mechanized Unit though even it is very weak.

But I have found something about the AI and don't know if it is normal. If I turn off Barbarians, the AI CIVs get very aggressive. I have had a war lasted for more than 25 turns with India. I don't know if it is the design or just a coincidence.

When was this in the game? Often the AI can be aggressive in the very early game, often because you are not ready and they can overrun you with warriors, but the main complaint is, that with two archers and a warrior or two you can defend against almost any attack.

Had a game where Gilgamesh gobbled up Japan. My Aztecs rage through the continent wiping out my neighbors, except for Gilgamesh. The two of us chill out for many turns, when he surprise DoWs me. Fine.

I crush him but save one of the Japanese cities for last. Retake it as the final blow to Sumer, and reinstate Hojo as a player.

He immediately denounced me for warmongering, even though he was not alive for any of my sins AND OWES HIS EXISTENCE TO THE VERY WARMONGERING HE DENOUNCES.
