Youtube: Let's play Civ IV is up!

I'll take a stab in the dark and guess that he means researching it with 0% slider for a turn and then try to trade it for a tech that has the same base price (Aes/Alpha) to "fine-tune" the trade. Before Currency it can be important to milk the best trades possible (i.e. to not research unneeded "extra" beakers when planning on trading the rest of the way) as there is no possibility for cash to buffer lopsided trades.

But how can he trade Monarchy if he hasn't researched it? He researches it at 0% slider, meaning he's not really researching it, and then trades it for another tech? I don't get it.

EDIT: On the subject of trading techs, it's pretty amazing how more advance players are able to research tech with the goal of trading it for another. This is what I have trouble wrapping my head around. Deciding to research a tech and being able to say that the AIs won't have that tech but will want it and will be willing to trade the tech I actually want. In my games it seems that when I make a trade request, the AI always says he's not willing to trade the tech I want just yet.

When I said "trade it for a tech" I meant "trade for it with another tech" like Aes/Alpha in that case. Partially researched techs are cheaper to get in trades.

For your EDIT problems, the solution is to know when AIs refuse to trade techs and why. For example the "Not yet" whine means not enough Civs they know have that tech - the threshold is leader personality dependant (can always check that in some reference) and never occurs with Friendly relations.

One thing I like about this walkthrough is the early game strategies which I think I still lack. TMIT made a decision to run scientists after he built a library in his capital. In the past, I built Libraries only to get the research boost, and pretty much neglect to use the scientists.

So when do you decide to use the scientists? I guess I have to make sure that by removing a worked tile, that the lost commerce won't actually make my beaker count go down. But also, I tend to build cottages very early so if I remove a worker from that tile, it also can't grow so essentially I invested worker turns in an improvement I am not using.

However, is it better to use the scientists to start getting GPPs even if I get a smaller beakers per turn? Or is the idea to run the scientists when I reach the happy cap?

After viewing TMIT's walkthrough (only half way through) I feel like maybe my starting strategies could use improving.

Choose which tiles you're going to remove. Keep a :food: special to run the 2 scientists and let your other citizens work whatever tiles you need.

As to why he did that, early GPP is the strongest form of research due to bulbing (but also Academy/settling).

So essentially, use trial and error to make sure I don't hurt my research by running scientists (ie: not remove worked cottages giving commerce)? This part of my game needs work - the math part. ;)

Because there is also the issue of then whipping my infrastructure. If I run 2 scientists, and then whip 2 pops, I could hurt my research although if I whip a university, it may not be too bad.

Anyways, thanks for the info.

Early scientist are also powerful research for the 3 beakers they provide, not many tiles can rival that through commerce. As kossin said, cities with food resources can usually run many specialists. A city with many food resources makes for a good GP farm.

TMIT, awesome video's. Are you going to do anymore?

If you are going to do anymore, would you be able to explain in the narrative a little bit more about building choices and overall strategy. Sometimes, you tended to click so fast in the building screens, I could not see what you built or what units you were building and i was sorta lost in at those points. Otherwise, awesome job!

I'm going to do more but not sure how many since I'm now live-streaming my games...possibly more popular games will get lifted over to youtube after some split work.

I am actually going to make LP's. Not just from Civ, but many other types of games. Could you pass down some tips?

<My CamStudio software is playing the video way before the audio. Why is this?>

So I finally finished watching and it was pretty cool and informative. I've never seen another Civ get nuked, so it was cool. What I liked was that it was very informative in terms of the decisions being made at what time. I still have a couple of questions that hopefully TMIT or someone else could answer.

1. The decision to war late in the game. In all my games, if I had 2 other Civs sharing my land mass, I would go to war with at least one of them alot earlier. Was their a reason why you waited longer? I know the land you had was nice. Also, you had Civs to trade techs with as well.

2. One poster mentioned that you were pumping out military units like crazy (Tanks, Fighters, etc...). I assume this was in you Heroic Epic City. That being said, to build the HE, you need a level 4 military unit. How could you have gotten a level 4 unit when you didn't really war in the early part of the game. Maybe I just don't understand what a level 4 is or any level for that matter.

3. You waited a long time for Forges. I heard of the concept of not building a modifier if the base production is small (same goes with markets if the amount of GPT is minimal) but would any modifier help? Or was it a questions of the hammers that would have been used to build the forge were better invested someplace else?

Anyways, I learned a lot from the walkthrough.

You can unlock HE from fighting barbs since you can accumulate up to 10 XP from fighting them. People will often 'abuse' (for want of a better word :P) this aspect and keep barbs around for XP farming to unlock the HE, especially if they don't want to war early on, or are isolated.

Hello, TheMeInTeam.

I've been toying with this for a while (I mean the livestream thing) and I'm/we're all ready to broadcast the up-coming Civilization Multiplayer Championship Cup of this Week-end

(Schedule is here : http://league.civplayers.com/forum/index.php?topic=4275.0)

The broadcast should be here : http://livestream.com/CivilizationLive

I've got a technical question though, TMIT, I can't get to have the Sound of the game being recored, it only records my voice. I'm using Procaster like you are I believe, and my audio settings, of the 3 option : Default device --> make multiple small file, my voice. 2 other option just record my voice...

Any tips on this ? Did you encounter a similar problem ?

You can find samples of videos of MP game here :

(That's our testing page)

More to follow !!

willem is "********". are you serious? are you 5 years old? grow up and start being respectful to those that are less fortunate than you.

If you are referring to something I said in game, realize that I am obviously not targeting the less fortunate...I'm not even targeting human beings. There is more than one meaning to the word ********, and pinning assumptions on its use in an overly politically correct application (that has no relevance to this game whatsoever, mind you) does not make me the one appearing childish ;).
