I'm playing a game as India, and lucky me, I have the Zulus as neighbors. I was ready to see the Impi UU, but Zulu Janissaires? How the heck do the Zulus end up with Janissaires? At first I thought it was just one oddball unit, but then I saw a second and a third. How the heck are they getting them?

They can give out a random civ's UU now. You can check which one a city state will give out.

EDIT::ninja:

G&K was already giving out khans. I got MoVs twice in a single game and it was gamebreaking. I hope that it will be eliminated.

I'm working on a mod that will remove the UU gifts and introduce a new, more powerful CS ability focused on elite cream-of-the-crop units. Haven't announced much yet because I might lose interest or find out that it's impossible to do, but I'm learning this stuff fast.

I though military CS only give out UUs of Civs not in the game. They can also got out Khans and Merchant of Venice great people.

I am 100% sure the Merchant of Venice come from the Patronage finisher, since you also get them with Venice in the game. The same with Khans. Maybe through both ways.

You could even get Khans in vanilla Civ V.

In short:
- if you've finished patronage, you can get any GP, including Khans and MoVs, from ANY City-State ally
- each militaristic City-State has a single unique military unit that it will gift if you are allies and at an appropriate part of the tech tree

The militaristic CS's unit doesn't, as far as I know, change under any circumstances. You can view it in the CS screen in one of the tooltips (I can't remember which).

One other things is that the UU that a military CS gives is SPECIFICALLY from a civ that is not in the game. You can see what they give when looking at the CS, though I don't remember exactly where you have to hover to see the tooltip :).

Thanks for the clarification, The QC - also, I hear you can get Foreign Legion as one of the UUs even though it's no longer in the game as one.

You are lucky that he didn't got Tericos from CS because tericos are considered melee units & would cost Zulus half upkeep due to their UA.

If you click on a militaristic CS and hover over the text "Trait: Militaristic" you can see specifically which UU the CS has access to. It will give that UU from when it discovers the tech until it goes obsolete I believe. Every militaristic CS has access to exactly one UU.

Edit: Oops, didn't read through the thread. Sorry.

Or Immortals that upgrade into Impi with a double healing rate.

Remember that when the Zulu get those UU's they don't get the Ikanda promotions, which are much of the reason why Zulu melee units are as competitive with the standard ranged armies as they are.
