Zwi1 - Low Pressure Deity

:cringe:
When a Deity civ comes at you that early, there isn't much you can do about it. The only possible way to keep Washington would have been to abandon the Pyramids in favor of a spearman.

Good job on surviving the onslaught dojoboy, but I will post a fresh start tomorrow since I advertized the game as "Low Pressure Deity" rather than "Desperate Deity Survival". Maybe I should replace aggression 3 Babylon with aggression 2 Iroquois and choose a higher % of land to further reduce the odds of another early sneak attack.

For the record, I took a try at my last save and suffered a Conquest defeat in 2550 BC having missed the hut settler. It looks like Babylon was coming no matter what.

Whew, that's good news. Definitely looking forward to the new save. ;)

I re-played dojoboy's turns trading w Babylon to make them peaceful. Without success: We sustained the first attack until we got get a peace deal costing 70g, 4gpt in 2270BC. However, the next attack came in 1870BC and we lost again since I did not pop a settler from a hut. :(

With diplomacy being one of your many game-play strengths tao, its evident our goose was cooked from the start.

Zwi1_Start2.jpg

There has been two changes to the setup conditions. The Bablyonians have been changed to the Iroquois and the water coverage has been decreased from 70% to 60%. The start position looks even stronger than the last one with a second cow peeking out of the fog SW of the settler.

4000 BC - Found Washington revealing the second cow. Minimum science started on Alphabet, and the worker moves to irrigate the nearest cow.

3950 BC - Scout continues due West.

3750 BC - Washington completes a second scout which heads east. A hut gives Ceremonial Burial.

3700 BC - The worker begins mining the second cow. Washington grows and lux tax is raised to prevent a riot.

3650 BC - Pop a hut, but it is deserted.

3600 BC - Washington warrior->warrior. Hut gives local maps.

3500 BC - Meet the Iroquois and buy a worker for 27g.

3450 BC - Washington warrior->warrior. Lux tax turned off due to military police effect.

3350 BC - Washington warrior->warrior.

3250 BC - Washington warrior->Pyramids. I have built 4 warriors in total because barbarians might be more of a problem with more land area.

3200 BC - Washington grows 3->4 lux tax raised to prevent riot.

3100 BC - We get 25g from a tribe. There is a barbarian warrior near our eastern scout.

3000 BC - Washington grows 4->5 lux tax raised to prevent riot.

Here we go again

The Iroquois are the only known civ at this point, and they are far enough away that we shouldn't have another early sneak attack. Keep Washington growing and working developed tiles, and we might be able to finish the Pyramids before barbarian horsemen show up.

I've learned that in the gotm it is valid to check your opponents in the beginning via F10. This shows, that our opponents are
  1. Iroquois
  2. France
  3. India
[/list=1] Both India and France are commercial and thus start w alphabet. Therefore I would not have chosen alphabet for min research. Maybe mysticism or bronze working ....

No problem on checking the F10 screen as I preset all three opponents anyway (see the fist post). As for minimum science on Alphabet, I figured that on Deity we are unlikely to get any tech first, so Alphabet is the most expensive first tier tech and will save the most gold if minimum science completes.

It's been over 48 hrs since the save was posted, so go ahead and take it dojoboy. Make sure to check the luxury tax levels each time Washington grows to prevent a riot in our only city (This type of diligence is necessary at Deity level).

In terms of improvements, mine grassland by the river or road forests before mining hills because hills take twice as long to improve but only yield as much production as a forest under despotism.

Observations:

Diplomatic relationships much better this time round. ;) I managed to avoid civil disorder, which for me is an improvement. We've a warrior - N, scout - NW, scout - E, and a warrior - SE. WASh garrisoned by 3 warriors. Give me some feedback on improved/worked tiles.

Washington has been improved reasonably well with a decent balance between food and shield production. I probably would have built a road (but not a mine) on a hill connecting the bonus grassland to the east with the rest of the improvements to save worker turns in the long run, but it isn't too important in the short run. Since food income is generally more important than shield income while in despotism, it may have been better to have mined one more grassland rather than road another forest, but in this unusual case of a race for the Pyramids, we might end up working the extra forest anyway.

Speaking of the race for the Pyramids, both France and Iroquois have started it. Paris is currently size 1 (from F11) and Salmanca is size 5. India is working on both the Oracle and Colossus, but not the Pyramids. With our head start, I think we will get it, but the Iroquois might make it close.

Pre-turn:
We don't want to have too much cash to prevent extortions. Hence trade: mysticism from India for 84g; mysticism, 1gpt to France for the wheel, 5g. No horses within range.

1, 2150BC: alphabet; min research on polytheism
2, 2110BC: Teoihuacan tribe tells us warrior code. India knows writing.
3, 2070BC: explore
4, 2030BC: explore running away from barbs
5, 1990BC: explore
6, 1940BC: warrior chased by 2 barbs pops goody hut and gets worthless map :(
7, 1910BC: scout gets cornered by barbs, evades; warrior gets support by French colleague
8, 1870BC: continue evading
9, 1830BC: scout escapes; forrest-> grassland Pyramids still in 2
IBT France offers hbr for 70g; decline
10, 1790BC: another forest->grassland
11, 1750BC: Pyramids in Washington, s warrior to time settler w growth; Iroquois b Oracle in Salamanca
12, 1725BC: Washington b warrior s settler; northern scout sees another goody hut and will beat French warrior in popping it. Hoping for tech we buy writing from India for 150g, 1gpt (now we can look out for discovery of map making); bronze working from Iroquois for writing, 1gpt, 2g.
13, 1700BC: change production to temple allowing to pop settler. Hut gives us iron working; 3 cheers to the Cherokee. And we have iron next to Washington. :) Regrettably, iw is well known in the world. :(
14, 1675BC: culture expands and we have gems (already roaded). Everybody has map making and we trade: hbr, wm from Iroquois for wm, 22g; wm, 54g from India for wm; map making, wm from France for wm, 46g, 4gpt; wm to Iroquois for 22g
15, 1650BC: Washington b settler s barracks
16, 1626BC: delay popping of hut until we have used settler; mm W
17, 1600BC: New York founded s temple; Cherokee tell us philosophy and we start "we love the Cherokee day" [dance] India offers 260g and we wait
18, 1575BC: Washington b barracks s settler (mm); India still offers 260g for philosophy thus they research something else
19, 1550BC: mm W grow next turn
20, 1525BC: mm W scientist and 0% research; trade maps netting 15g
21, 1500BC: W b settler s next

Summary: We were successful in building The Pyramids and in popping and trading techs. Washington is now on 3 turn settler cycle. If necessary, we can upgrade warrior to sword because we have iron and barracks. The next settler started going East, probably to settle near the wheat. Horses, cow, furs are near barb village in the farer east; settler going there needs strong escort, but we should go there soon. Washington now does not need any more mm, I hope. I leave it to the next player, whether he wants to trade away philosophy for cash now.

The Save.

Unable to download save, coming out as "gibberish" on my screen. I went to the download page 5, but same thing occurred. Pic of save shows a question mark by it. What would that mean?

Correction: you were able to download the save, you can't open it. ;)

Downloading should work with "save link target as". I just did it, and it worked.

On the Macintosh, you then have to assign Type/Creator codes as "GAMd"/"Civ3". I do this with a File Buddy droplet. Brad Oliver stated some time ago, that his next release will open .sav files, regardless of type and creator. I did this w the file downloaded from the link in your post and it opened fine.

To make it easier for you, here is a stuffed version. Server is acting strange: reported twice successful upload, but doesn't have the file. You have to wait till tomorrow.

Great, thanks tao. I do remember this now, it just happens so infrequently that I forget that solution. Btw, it opened for me, no problems.

Got it...will play tomorrow
