    There's also the fact that the AI attacks at lower winning odds than humans tend to do. This adds to the perception that humans lose at higher odds.

    Using spies to incite revolt in the selected city is a good way to circumvent the annoyance of castle+walls+culture against longbows. You still need trebs though, as they are still nasty (especially in hilly cities).

    Indeed, but I would argue against it (unless you feel you ABSOLUTELY must convert him to your state religion) just by considering the hammer cost of those extra missionaries. Besides, if that neighbour has theology as a religious civic, it may be impossible.

    Warrior First, when is it optimal?

    Go warrior first only in multiplayer or with raging barbs. In the worst case scenario, you're only one tech away from improving your nearest resource. By the time your first worker goes out, the tech should be completed.
