Talk about UNFUN! I just played a game where no sooner did I complete high end spaceship components than they were destroyed by AI spies.

I won the game through cultural victory before I could implement a plan to queue up components and then build them all at once, but that is not what I intended.

I was performing counter espionage in foreign cities - my spy ticker was 100% - I had every possible spy improvement - and still the bastards were able to bring my spaceship to nothing. Why do Firaxis have such things when it makes the game a misery?

Is there some way I can edit this NEVER to happen again?

Can't you turn off espionage in custom game options?

Apparently your espionage ratio with whomever is sabotaging you is very poor, so they can keep doing it to you. You should try building some espionage defense in critical cities (security bureaus or positioning a spy there so they have a higher failure rate). If you know who the perpetrator is, you could use what few EPs you probably have on counterespionage missions against them, you could also find a city not needed for Space parts, build some ESP buildings, assign spy specialists and direct more/all your EPs against the perpetrator.

Or you could play Vanilla/Warlords instead.

except that your own spies can spot enemy spies and also kill them? Am I not right?
I never use them.

No. A spy in the city reduces the chance of success for enemy spies in it. A security bureau provides the same defense, and the effects do not stack. One spy or a security bureau in the city is the best defense you can get.

The idea of spies stationed along the borders is not so bad, if you already have a security bureau/spy stationed in the city, but won't that only provide a possibility of capture if the spy actually is on the same tile your spy is stationed at?

Also, if you've built some EP structure and you're still getting killed by missions, someone probably has a huge EP lead on you, you can figure out who it was by looking at the EP ratios that show up when you mouse over the leader names on the scoreboard - look for someone with a massive ratio with you. You may have come to the table on EPs too late and all your additional work doesn't take away the EPs they have. If you did not manage againt whom your EPs are directed, the EPs you're generating will be spread among all Civs evenly and may still catch you up only slowly if an AI or two has been focusing on you for a long time, especially if a lot of Civs are still alive.

I've played a fair number of space race games, and it seems to me that the spy-in-each-city method works best for preventing the sabotage. I like the idea of spies on the borders, as well, but unless you have a nice corner of the world with few borders, that might be hard to do.

That's odd because in my last game I tried to sabotage Rome's spaceship production but I couldn't. The Sabotage Production option just didn't show up. Maybe I just didn't have eneough EP points to pull it off.

If someone is sabotaging you that consistently, they must have *huge* espionage into you, and you must have very, very little into them. Seriously, those are expensive missions, even moreso if you've got a security bureau in every city. It's *extremely* rare, in my experience, to lose more than two spaceship components per game. Heck, I don't think I've ever even lost more than one.

I didn't even know that it was possible to sabotage spaceship parts.

Edit: Nevermind, I figured out how to do it.

Edit Again: Nevermind again, I guess there is a destroy space ship part mission. Learn something new everyday.

You can however destroy the components they have already built, using espionage missions.

One game I played I repeatedly lost parts to Qin Shi Hiang when he was putting all of his espionage (of which he had a lot) on me. Of course, I destroyed an equal amount of his as well, so I came out on top in the end. It becomes a lot easier to destroy parts when the nation is your neighbour and both of you are throwing EP's all over the place

Incorrect. While the manual does have the "Kill Spy" and "Spies May Not Enter Our Borders" missions, these do not actually exist in the game. Apparently between the printing of the manual and the completion of the game, some genius decided these were too powerful....

Spies can detect other spies, place them on the border where the AI has to pass them

This will only work if the enemy spy ends its turn on the border square in which you've stationed the spy. The best bet is to station spies in all of your cities. Unfortunately, the way things work now (IIRC), an enemy spy can sabotage a "project" from ANY city in the empire, not just the city building the project. So station spies in all of your cities for maximum security...but definitely in the cities that your rivals can easily reach. Bhruic has a very interesting thread on espionage somewhere in the forum that has far more info on the subject than I can remember. Suggest you look it up.

To defend against spy actions

1. Generate more EPs (doen't matter against who)

2. Run Counter epionage missions against the one spying on you (if you know)

3. put a spy OR aSecurity Bureau in the threatened tile (S.B. if it is a city, spy if it is a strategic resource tile.. or just not done yet)

4. Close Borders with the Attacker

....the first four increase the chance of Stopping the opponent.... the remaining ones just increase the cost

4. If the attacker's state religion is in the city: make it your state religion and take the holy city from him... or get him to give up that state religion

5. If the attacker ever owned that city (and got some of his own culture in it) increase the level of Your culture in it.

6. put a Security Bureau in the city

7. If possible move your opponent's capital farther away from the city (or give up cities close to his Capital.)
