One really interesting sound bite comes from 33:33 of this video.

One of the members of Easy Allies was told by a Firaxis dev that if you don’t do well in a crisis, or if you lose an Age, or something, then “darker paths can open, you can lash out at the world.”

No idea what that could mean. Perhaps like, if you get wrecked in an Antiquity Crisis then maybe you can unlock a Pirate civ (forgive the clumsy terminology) for Exploration.

Maybe we'll be like:

So that would be a way to unlock “Vikings”/Huns, etc.
I wouldn't say the Vikings did poorly in a crisis. They just got a little bored in the long Scandinavian winter, and turned to killing and pillaging for entertainment, as one does. :mischief:

You successfully build Petra, but only have one flat sand tile.

And you also earn all the remaining Great Admirals, but they’re stuck in a single lake.

And Queen Victoria gets nerfed again so you get one free melee unit when you unlock Machinery, but they spawn on another continent next to a Barbarian camp and all your Harbour Districts immediately turn into unimproved crab tiles.

…or, maybe it’s something cool. Fingers crossed.

Eras

There are three Eras in the Game Antiquity, Exploration & Modern and at the start of each era you pick a new Civilization to play as.

Eras are progressed by Age Progress Points which are triggered by achieving Legacy Points in the Victory Track,

Crisis

In-between each era there will be a crisis, causing you to add negative policies to your Civilizaiton.

Crisis Polices

Banditry
: – Gold for each Imported Resource
Barbarian Mercenaries: Extra Gold Maintenance on Military Units
Decentralisation: – Gold and Food in Towns with a Specialisation
Inferior Tactics: – Combat Strength against Independent Powers.
Prognosis: + Science on Science Buildings in Infected Settlements; – Gold on Science Buildings
Rebellious Commanders: – Happiness in all cities for each Commander Rank
Recruitment Shortfalls: + Food in Towns; – Healing on all Units
Tribute: – Gold for Each City State you are Suzerain of

Most likely players civilization gets some penalties, I don't think they unlock bad civilizations for you, they already have stories with those who complain that the colonized turn into colonizers even if the empire of Star Wars, Mordor and the Harkonnens would not have been bad at this point, perhaps they could fit into a possible DLC with an expansion of the Eras

Isn't it also confirmed that if you get defeated you can play as some sort of barbarians for the rest of the age?

Is that what the phrase in the OP refers to, maybe?

Is it? That's an interesting twist.

I would say unlikely you are already at the end of the scenario and how many turns would you play as a barbarian (and for what?)

I can't find where that might be published, but it's something that a Gamescom attendee conveyed was part of the Civ 7 presentation.
So, umm, totally unrelated question. Can I delete my T1 settler? :shifty:

Well that would be wild. And actually, the ability to get revenge as an angry barbarian horde might be enough to make me keep playing a losing game, rather than rage quitting as soon as victory seems impossible.
That's my guess as to the rationale for the mechanic. Keep you playing til the next age.

And then maybe that loss leads you to different civ choices, like the Huns.

I would doubt it…But I would really like it
(basically player civs are effectively unkillable…and they have a good chance to recapture cities in the crisis)

So if the Normans conquer all Songhai settlements, there will be Songhai “rebels / raiders / warlords” forming, with a massive spike in the crisis (including probable unhappiness in those conquests). Then if the Songhai rebels become the newly liberated Buganda.

That could be really interesting…(you could even bounce back in the same age if your conqueror had other problems)
