Playing as Eleanor of France, TS Europe map, Emperor difficulty, all standard

Turn 118, Harald declares a surprise war. His troops did not get kicked out of my territory, allowing him to basically get an immediate surround. But the main issue is that my ranged city attack is only doing one damage to his troops, even though the city has classical walls plus a swordsman stationed inside (listed as 41 strength city). As you can see by the SS below, the city would do almost no damage to his slinger - the same with his catapult or any of the other troops. The attack from the city to the south also only does one damage. I tried restarting the game, but still the same issue. So its gg since there is no way to repel his attack without city defenses. I did a search, but haven't seen anyone else mention this bug.

It looks like you might not have any ranged units. If that's the case it would explain why your city's ranged attack is only 1. The city strength of 41 is irrelevant to it's range attacks. That is used as the defensive strength when the city is itself attacked.

I have never heard of ranged units affecting the strength of the city attack, after about 800 hours played in Civ 6 and thousands of hours played in Civ 5. A 41 strength city with walls has always been able to basically one-shot a catapult or a slinger, ranged unit inside or not. I checked the integrity of the game files and it found 3 issues, so I hope that is the problem.

Um, that's how the city ranged attack is determined, by the civilization's strongest ranged unit. A range of 1 would mean you have NO ranged units.

The base strength of 41 is calculated by the melee strength of your strongest unit -10, or that of the unit garrisoned in the city, whichever is greater. This value is ONLY used defensively when the city is attacked. It has no bearing on the city ranged attack.

Likely not, considering everyone that verifies the integrity of the game files will result in the same three files failing to validate and being reacquired. iirc they have something to do with the Game Launcher added some time ago. They're inconsequential to the correct functioning of the game.

Interesting. This must be the first game where I didn't build early ranged units. Usually I build 3 early slingers, but I turned barbs off for this game and didn't need much of an army. I guess you learn something new every day (I do anyway). Thanks for the information. So, I guess I can just rush buy an archer and potentially save my city. Harald doesn't have a battering ram, so all I need to do is kill the catapult and he will have a hard time capturing.
