1.21g patch problems with trades

I downloaded the latest Mac patch for Civ III and now none of the other civs will consider giving me "gold per turn" payments. They will gladly offer me hundreds of gold for a tech, but are insulted at the request for even 1 gold per turn. This means that any trades are limited to what they have in their treasury at the moment, which is putting a crimp in my trades. I used to rely on having 50-100 GP per turn coming in as I grew, but now there is nothing. Is this a bug? Is anyone else running into this?

Forgot to say that I am running Jaguar on a G4 Tibook, if that makes a difference.

Well, I have definitely noticed (although I hadn't specifically tied it to a change that happened with the 1.21g patch) that the AI is not interested in GPT trades until later in the game -- Middle Ages at the earliest. But definitely by the time I'[m in the Industrial era and I've taken the tech lead, I'm able to extract large GPT trades for new tech.

I've always meant to narrow it down to when exactly the AI starts being willing to do GPT -- anyone else noticed?

This may be coded into the game for AI behaivor because early in the game its difficult to generate stable gpt. In the mid- to late game, the Civs are usually more stable and can realistically pay gpt for 20 turns. Does this make any sense?

I will play deeper into the game and let you know if it changes. I am currently playing Russia. Just crossed into AD and I am half way though the Middle Ages. Usually by this time the other civs are willing to give me GPT, but maybe it will happen later. Thanks.

By the time I've got a game just about won and have a big tech advantage, I find other civs will offer >100 gold per turn for recent techs.

A) I think early in the game the AI doesn't HAVE much gpt to give, if any.
B) I think it may be tied to government changes/differences. If you're in despotism, they're not going to give you much.....whether they're in it or not...

You were right. Once they caught up with me tech-wise, they were willing to trade GPT. It seems that the patch greatly delays the point where they are willing to do this. Thanks.

gpt trades depends on the trust the other civs have in you.
of course they don't trust you in the beginning.

to get gpt deals asap:

- start trading early
- don't break any treaties

you have to build up trust before you can make a big deal paying 100 gpt and break the deal by attacking the next turn :D
