1.61 patch does NOT fix problem for 6800 users

I have the same problem with the 6800 GT by BFG...rainbow like tv screen lines that causes me to hard boot it. I'm lucky if I can get in more than 10 mins. Turning the machine off and letting it cool down seems to get me more time but not enough to warrent continued rebooting. Very frustrating. I'm considering the Arctic Cooler too, but am so angry about the situation I don't know if I want to spend more money to make something work that should just work. A friend has a lesser nVidia card (and machine) and he has none of these issues. While I'm not a hard core Civ fan I do love the game and want to play when I want to play.

If anyone has more info please post. Thanks.

Ok, I may be able to support the 6800GT/Heat theory. It occured to me that the side panel fan, right next to the vid card, had not been plugged in. Since I plugged it in no lock up! I got in about 2 hours with no problems....this beats a lock up every ten mins. I'll have to start another game and see if my luck holds.

DSmith... Good job man on the review!!
I will agree with everything DSmith has stated. I installed the Arctic-Cooling fan about the same time as Dsmith. My results are the same... not one crash! even played large maps!! I also have used Newegg many times for computer parts at home and work..my prefered vender. BFG 6800GT 256K

thanks

Hi just installed a new power supply (mentioned earlier in this thread)....something modern and designed for today’s components and am quite happy with the results........on how it went in, the tidiness of the cables, better air flow and more power.....BUT......

........my situation remains the same!!! Spontaneous reboot very soon after starting the game. Only manage 2-3 turns....then crash!! So my theory on power is cr*p. Still think it was worthwhile doing the power supply though. It gave me the opportunity to clean and reorganize my case....back to the thread....

I am unsure of the temperature theory as my 6800GS does not get a long enough chance to heat up. My Temperatures are as follows:

Motherboard 38 °C (100 °F)
CPU 17 °C (63 °F)
GPU 48 °C (118 °F)
GPU Ambient 30 °C (86 °F)
Maxtor 6L250S0 29 °C (84 °F)
WDC WD1200PB-00FBA0 34 °C (93 °F)

These are my normal operating temp before the game and straight after the reboot. It will run at these all day every day. My new theory is this....I (and possibly a great many other Civ IV owners) are trying to play a dud game. It is not the card.....it occurred with my ATI 9700 as well as my 6800GS, it is not our computer setup...everything else just works, it is not our operating temperatures.....most temps reported here look OK, it is not our video/hardware drivers as they are new or older stable versions, it is not the operating system as I am sure we have updated and patched the living daylights out of it in order to get CIV IV working and that only leaves one thing in my mind.......

The common thread in all of this is CIVILIZATION IV!!!

I have spent too much time on this and must now stop stuffing about and get on to some other tasks...CIV III might get another run...at least it worked! I will be keeping an eye out occasionally on these forums just in case a user manages to fix the game....something the developers seem unable to do.

I apologize if I offend or upset anyone but it should not be this difficult to purchase, install, run and play a game. I can not troubleshoot anymore.

Thanks to all and…..BYE.

btw.. have your people with heating problems tried to change the

SetMaxFrameRate = 0

setting in CivilizationIV.ini file so civ4 puts less strain on the graphics card?

Personally I run it with 40 so other programs on the PC get more work cycles.. not because I have crash problems

Hello,
After several weeks with no video problems with Civ 4 ...... The same issue is back. Crashed 4 times in one day.
So, investing in a new cooler (see eariler post) didn't resolve the problem. I'm out of options...
It's sad that own all 4 civ games and in the end, game 4 has to be shelfed, because the lack of support.

Good luck all!!

I believe pretty strongly that all the overheating talk is a lot of unfounded posturing and theorizing.

The bottom line for me is: 1.52 does not crash on my 6800 GT. 1.61 does crash with the weird interference pattern. There's a bug in the game, and it has nothing to do with my system, because my system did not change one iota.

I wish Firaxis would acknowledge this, or at least say that they're unable to reproduce it.

The biggest problem is that this sort of crash *is* expected for people who overclock their systems, or have cooling issues with their video cards. That's why, I suppose, it's so hard to nail down. For me, though, it's a simple equation, with nothing else changed. Clean install, upgrade to 1.52, no crashes. Clean install, upgrade to 1.61, crashes within 20 minutes of starting the game.

I am experiencing the same problems with my XFX Geforce 6800GT card....I was hoping to find some sort of solution to the problem here, but I guess I'll have to buy warlords and hope the problem will solve itself with it.

Patch 1.61 is a total failure. We should probably complain with Firaxis and hope they get a more stable patch, otherwise my copy of warlords is going to work as a bookholder!

I can confirm this crash. PC freezing in mid-game. Mostly when a close-up view of a combat is being loaded. No strange screen, just freezing game. Have to reset the PC.
Also using a 6800 Ultra. NO overheating problem, the card doesn't even reach 75 degrees, no driver problem.
It's simply the game.

I'd like to confirm this with my Gainward 6800 GT.

I tried turning it down to 800x600 with medium settings and it still happened. Also switched off the manufacturer guaranteed overclocking. Still happened.

Thing is when Civ IV first came out it didn't happen. So I reckon it's a combinaiton of patches/drivers that does it, though I haven't had the patience to try all the different combinations. I stopped playing 2-3 months ago to just wait for Warlords :(

Though the ini fix sounds promising, as if it happens on medium and low res it's got to be caused by just doing way too many frames.

EDIT: Actually possibly 1024x768 it was a couple months ago, point is low res.

I'm another unhappy victim.

Hadn't played for about 6 months but just picked up Warlords.

Now I have the problem as described above.

My card is the apparent loser: BFG GF6800GT AGP.

Nothing to add other than the oddity that the first time it crashed was just after I set the in game AA sampling to 4. Unfortunately setting it back to 0 didn't help.

I have being the same problems as everyone else. But it has been strange I played a full game yesterday without any problems. Then I tried a new game then I get the same graphic problem as other people said. I have a BFG 6800gs unlocked(16,6). I tried many things diffrent things new drivers, diffrent settings, no antialasing and still the same. It is just weird why Civ 4 warlords is this graphic intensive when i can run Oblivion, Fear, Prey just fine.

I guess all we can do is hope if the can fix this problem .

Just sharing what solved my problem...

I also couldn't play Civ4 - Warlords, my XFX 6800GT went from 85ºC to 120ºC in about a minute while playing Civ.
So I opened the fan cover of my graphic card, I cleaned the dirt inside (it was really a lot) and now the temperature of my 6800GT idle is 62ºC and while playing Civ is always lower than 80ºC!

Ah! My NVIDIA drivers are the 91.31 and I'm using the 1.61 patch for Civ.

I hope it helps...

I tried several things today, including:

*uncheck write combining
*add LargePageMinimum to HKLM/SYS/CCS/Control/Session Man/Mem Man
*changing AGP to 128 mb
*adjusting the PCI Latency
*various .ini settings

that all failed (although framerate definitely affects time to failure).

What does seem to be working is falling back to driver 71.89.

Thank You Kronoz :goodjob: .

(BFG Nv6800GT w/256mb).

Well it was not enough to downgrade driver...I thought the problem was solved but it wasnt, there were fewer crashes but they were still there.

I tried opening my graphics-card and clean out dust around the fan and it seems to help...I have'nt had any crashes since.

Never had anywhere near as much problem with a game, and if it had'nt been Civilization I would have given it the boot a long time ago...but now all problems are solved.....I hope... :)

Just a few loose ends, barely worth mentioning:

I did remove/reassemble the stock cooler my BFG gf6800GT and replaced all the original thermal paste with Antec Silver.

Many of the changes I made caused the wonder videos to stutter badly. That was all fixed once the driver was fixed and I put all the .ini settings back to original.

Conclusion (that many other posters came to long ago): this is a DRIVER problem caused by nVidia that they refuse to fix
