1500AD on GEM

I'm curious if forest was intentionally meant to being covering the many improvements on the map or not?

Doesn't seem like a big deal, but I do notice it on a lot of scenarios here on civfanatics.

There's a few farms on hills as well.

I guess I'm kinda picky with things technically fitting within in the rules of the game though.

If it's technically possible, we do it! (For instance, Rhye has barbs spawning on Mountains in RFC - which gave me the idea of introducing villages/towns on Mountain and Oasis squares. IMO, this is pretty neat - especially if you consider the actual size of a Civ-square; the real Alps for instance contain several cities. In Civ-terms this can only be simulated by placing a village/town on it when designing a scenario or mod.):mischief:

And sometimes it looks really nice. I've made a map once with a lake with jungle, which became a huge oasis. Or maybe a tundra with ice. Maybe smog above a city. With the world builder it's all possible. Sometimes it's fun to build a map just to look at it.

This is cool! Can't wait to play it, but I was thinking, someone should mix it with RFC! That would be neat.:goodjob:

A couple of thoughts I had reguarding this map:

Seeing how easily the Spanish take over Southern America, possibly consider giving the English or French a larger presence? Or somehow work in a Dutch faction? Traditionally, these were their rivals in the colonization of the Americas, I believe. This may be off historically, but perhaps having a pirate presence down there, or having multiple scripted difficulties to weaken the economy over there?

On the Tongan note, have you considered having New Zealand and the Maori (this is the correct spelling of the word) as the starting point of this Civ, possibly renaming them as Polynesia rather than Tonga? It would give the AI a significant boost in their early establishment. Having one settlement in New Zealand and a few in Tonga, Fiji etc. would at least give them a more substantial starting land area, although this would make it more difficult for England to settle the area. If not, I think it would be good to have a representation of native Australians/NZers, and have the Tongans start militarily slightly stronger (numbers wise, not in technology) so they are capable of challenging them.

Adding pirates sounds interesting. I can have a look at that.

On the Tongan, I am considering to add a few settlers to them so that it can migrant to New Zealand or Australia sooner, at least for human player.

I am planning to update the whole GEM mod in a few weeks time so thes e changes can hopefully be included.

I look forward to it.

Generic question, as I'm relatively new to Civ, but how many hours of Gameplay would it usually take to complete a Marathon mode of this map? I've been playing for about 4-5 hours as the French and don't seem to have made that much progress. I've started 4 settlements in South America, peacefully assimilated Calais, and slaughtered many, many of my troops in attempts to take Venice. I just haven't made any of the progress I'd thought I would see by now.

I think I have never completed a marathon game! I always wanted to start another game on the second day. So i don't know how long it would take. I would say 30-40 hours?
