Can I install Civ 5 on 2 computers?
I will _not_ be running it on both at the same time.
I will connect to Steam when playing it.

Well sort of I.
I will not be able to play for a couple more weeks, but I want to let my son check it out on his computer.
After which I want to put it on mine.

If he likes it he may play occasionally after I put it on mine so I would like to leave it on both.

And yeah if he likes it a lot, I will buy another copy.

Ya itll work.. providing you install steam on his PC as well and give him your steam ID/password, which your not supposed to do but w.e

While it's technically possible, I don't recommend you do this, as you may end up banned from Steam. I don't think you're allowed to 'share' your account.

You are not legaly allowed to do this. But if somebody would ban you for that, he would be ashamed of himself.

What law says that someone is not allowed to run a Steam game on two computers?

Steam allows and, in fact, encourages such behaviour -- they just won't let you play online at the same time.

... You can use it in 2 computers yourself. Not lend your account to anybody, even your son, like the OP is asking to.

But really, you will not be banned for it.

I do it with Steam on my own computers with numerous games for my use... all the time.

Just make sure steam is open and running ONLY on the PC that you want to play at that time. Otherwise steam won't let you login from two PCs at once.

Remember when we actually had enforcable rights to the content we paid for?

Those were the good 'ol days...

Remember when software licenses for games allowed you to install the game on a separate user's computer for that user's enjoyment?

Oh wait, that was never the case. Take off your nostalgia glasses.

As for OP, just do it. You aren't technically allowed to, but who cares, you won't get banned and the FBI won't come knocking on your door. Just calm down.

My Nostalga glasses are 20/20 thank you. I miss games coming with buddy dics. Some of my old favorites are on that list:

Yeah, funny how some folks still use this thread as a place to complain about how Steam doesn't allow what the OP is describing.... when it does.

I do it all the time. I have Steam installed on multiple PCs many with matching games, and I can and do play the games on whatever PC I choose...

Steam has been banning people for logging on from seperate IP's. I don't feel like digging thru threads to find it right now, but end result after deliberation is canceled account and refund. I don't suggest it.

Which kinda makes me mad if I want to move and Steam will jump my stuff, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

From the steam support page...

This is one of the nice things about steam. You can access it from any PC. You just cannot access the same account simultaneously.

So, you could load you steam account onto your and your kids PC, you just can't use it in both places at once. If you try to do so this could lead to a temporary lock out.

Question

I receive the error message "Your account <account name> is currently in use at another machine. You'll need to shut down Steam on your other computer in order to log in here." What should I do?
Answer

This error indicates that another computer has recently been logged in to this Steam account. A Steam account can only be logged in from one computer at a time. Rapidly switching the account between multiple computers may result in a temporary lockout.

If you repeatedly see this message, please restart your computer and re-test the issue. Make sure to try launching Steam.exe directly from C:\Program Files\Steam\ (or your default Steam directory) to further test the issue.

If the issue persists, please Contact Steam Billing and Support

In this case, both PCs will present the same IP, as they are most likely behind a common router in the same house.

Wrong and wrong.

Check my reply a few posts up.
