Clifton Phifer Lee lost his shutout (and the win) with 2 outs, 2 strikes in the 9th...the look on his face after he gave up that homer was priceless!

It really wasn't Cliff's fault that he pitched into a ND. The offense is picking a bad time to slump.

Tiger's clinched last night! :D

The way the Braves managed to blow last night's game, despite the best efforts of the Marlins, gives me some hope. The Giants are also close - only a game back from the Cards, and are also on a tear.

At the moment the Phils would host the D'backs in the NLDS, but could easily end up hosting the Brewers, Cards or Giants. Any preferences, Phillie Phans ? I guess you'd be confident whoever you get, but would probably pass on playing the Giants if possible?

no preference from me re 1st rd opponent. i guess if i were to pinpoint something, it would be to not play against hot pitchers. 5 game series are nerve-wracking due to the short nature and the 'whoever is hot' syndrome...

Statistically speaking Boston still has a 90% chance of making the playoffs... but that doesn't take into account several things:

1) They are playing absolutely terribly right now, and the Rays are playing great.

2) The Rays play the Yankees 7 of their 10 remaining games. With now a 5 game lead in the division, the Yankees will likely be resting players. Especially in the final series of the season.

3) Boston plays Baltimore 6 of their last 9, and the Yankees the remaining 3. The Yankees could be motivated to knock off Boston, but more importantly, these are the most meaningful 6 games of Baltimore's season. They'll be playing in a playoff atmosphere, and I'm sure Showalter would absolutely relish spoiling Boston's season.

Man I really feel bad for Halladay. :(

His Cy bid is probably gone now after loosing that game thanks to really bad defense and a tiny strikezone.

His Cy bid was already gone due to Justin Verlander. :king:

Halladay is NL not AL. Verlander has no relevance to Halladay at all unless the tigers play the Phils in the WS.

Besides in actual skill Halladay crushes Verlander with an FIP of 2.18 versus 2.91. Verlander has more wins due to much better run support and a lower ERA by having a world class defense unlike the Phils quite mediocre defense.

Hmm. I was thinking Halladay was with the Blue Jays. And the Tigers almost never provide adequate run support.

Really bad defense ? Can you elaborate ? At the most basic level, none of the runs against Halladay were unearned (unlike the single run against Lohse). He also was pitching against a Cards line-up 4 of what would be closest to our regular outfield (Theriot, Holliday, Freese and Molina were missing). I'm not saying the Phillies have a greatd efense, but I didn't think they sucked that bad last night.

Hallyday's still great and having a formidable season, don't get me wrong, but I expected the Cy to go to Kershaw or Captain Cucumber even if he had won last night's game.

I presume Verlander's a done deal for the Cy in the AL ?

Probably, he's first in Wins, Strikeouts, ERA, and WAR.

Most of that FIP difference is because Verlander pitches in the American League. Also their xFIPs are closer (3.10 vs. 2.68)

The NL Cy Young award is going to be much tougher than the AL, due to a much more even pitching effort in the top pitchers. You have Kennedy of the D-Back, who is leaidng the NL in wins. Kershaw who is the leader of ERA, WHIP and Strikes in the NL. And we also have Halliday of the Phillies, who is close in every category. but for my mind the Cy Young goes to either Kennedy or Kershaw. If Kershaw was on a team fighting for the playoffs, then he would be a show in for the title.

Cy Young voters don't care how good the team is. As it stands Kershaw will win because he leads the league in ERA and SOs and is only 1 win back from the league leader.
