Military and Commerce/Research will likely be the keys to victory in this game. I think we can all agree on this. We have already discovered that building a city on top of the hill containing the gold will yield additional commerce without having to waste a laborer to work the tile, which will be extremely beneficial. Hopefully, we can continue to find ways to maximize our commerce (and thus our research).
The other side of the research coin is equally important. We should be careful to not waste time researching techs that we do not want. While this obviously won't apply to the techs needed to advance from age to age, there are optional techs that we can bypass to save our valuable research. Among these optional techs are the government techs. If we don't intend to ever become a particular government, then we should not bother wasting our commerce to research it.
As we are not a religious nation by nature, we must endure a period of anarchy between governments. This can be quite costly, so we should obviously try to avoid changing governments as much as possible.
For those who believe that a Republic or Democracy should be our ideal form of government, I offer these words of caution: we will not be able to control when we are at war or at peace in this game. A hostile nation, no matter where they are in the world, can declare war in the game, even if they have no intention of ever sending troops our way, simply to create civil unrest.
However, if we are the only Monarchy or Communist state, and everyone else is a Democracy, we may find ourselves falling behind in research, productivity, and more. And declaring war on the rest of the world at the same time might not be a good strategy for success.
With this in mind, I open the floor for discussion on the issue of governmental strategy. What governments should we shoot for? What priority should we give them with respect to each other? What priority should we give research to governments with respect to other technologies?
