i wonder how this thing works out. a round world definitely has distinct differences from the way we would play a flat map.

my guess would be that they simply take a flat map and make it round by streching/shrinking the tiles to make it round. I believe veiwing both is possible according to some of the prerelease articles I have seen.

One wonders how badly the tiles will get distorted at the polar extremes? Or are they actually using a decent projection of the earth instead of a mercator for the flat maps?

hmm... i may be able to actually think it's not wierd when my galley somehow "reappears" on the other side of the minimap now....

From the looks of things they probably wond go past the arctic circles so the distortion shouldn't be too bad

Take a look at the released screenshots and videos... ;) That'll answer your question.

I thought it was already confirmed that the world would not be spherical?

Hasnt it already been confirmed that the world will be a tubular ring?

It is a shame that there isn't a spherical option - I would even be ok with the polar zones being one huge square with an EXTREMELY high movement cost (that would allow missles and planes to cross easier than ground units)

I believe that once in the distant past I posted a suggestion, in the extremely long suggestions thread that we had going, that Civ4 should present a full 3D projectisation of the planet so that you can zoom in and out and roll the globe to move from one area to the next.

It seems that they weren't able to do just that, but definitely went to the same direction.

I hope it was not my ill-adviced suggestion that now seems to make this game more like a RTS than a strategy game...
