As we are on the seas:

What was the last allied war ship to be sunk and when?

I'm tempted to say it's was the U.S.S. Indianapolis, but I don't know the date and I think some other ship was probably sunk after it. Probably a submarine that got mined.

Are we talking within the time frame of the war or not?

Because if not you could argue that say USS Phoneix has a pretty good claim since it wasn't sunk until 1982.

so the question is when was the last allied warship sunk the germans or japanese? or when was the last WWII allied warship sunk in combat and what conflict?

if the later question, a sub in the korean war?

Has to be WW2. And being the last allied ship sunk in the war, that means in the Pacific. Adler didn't say it had to sink in action, so it could have been an accident. I'm certain it is not a british sub as they lost only 3 in the Pacific and I don't think one was lost towards the war's end. I don't think any Soviet subs sank during the 2 weeks they were at war with Japan. So I think that leaves an American sub being the answer.

But that is as far as I can go without googling.

At first I have to clarify I meant a ship lost to the enemy, the Japanese, as this is obvious, within the time of the war, so until the surrender of Japan. And it is a submarine. If someone can give me the answer until tomorrow she or he can get the question. If not, meisen is getting the honour as he is the nearest as indeed a US submarine was sunk.

You always have to be sure with an Adler question. They almost invariably end up being after the end of hostilities in some way or another. I was half expecting the answer to be Giulio Cesare (sunk in 1955 by a WW2 German mine in Sevastapol bay whilst serving in the Russian navy) until he said it was a submarine

Sorry, I had to do other things. However here are the infos:

USS Bullhead, SS 332, Balao class. Captain: Lt. Com. E.R. Holt, Jr.
USS Bullhead was commissioned on Dec. 4th, 1944. After sinking 4 small Japanese sailing vessels on her 2nd patrol under Cdr. W. T. Griffith, she departed Fremantle on the 30th of July for her third and last patrol to the Java Sea. She was on August 6th off Bali, when an army fighter of 73rd Chutai spotted her and dropped 2 60 kg bombs. The pilot claimed to have hit a submarine as only bubbles and oil appeared after the attack. Infact USS Bullhead was lost with all hands (84).
This was the last loss of the Allied navies in ww2.

OK, another maritime question.

On November 19th 1941 there was a short action between 2 opposing naval vessels. One of them sank leaving around 300 survivors who were later rescued. The other ship disappeared completely leaving no survivors and a mystery of what happened to the ship. It is still a mystery to this day.

Can anyone guess the names of these 2 ships?

Hmmm... was one the USS Reben James? And the other U-54?
