4 grams - SNOW

So little to report.

Declared on Hannibal after he was being unreasonable in his trading demands, then watched his warrior park in the hills. When the warrior moved to threaten the worker on the gold hill, moved the worker to join his fellow in the plains. Mined and roaded the sugar (schnapps!). Managed the citizenry around for maximum gold, optimal shields and food. Swapped the barracks build to a spear when two more of Hannibal's warriors showed their faces, then swapped back when they died. Built the barracks just before we learned IW then discovered no iron in the immediate neghborhood. so started an archer.

There is a blue border peeking through the fog to the southeast, so we have another neighbor.

Take it away, goz. Hope things are a little cooler down your way. I'd send some snow if I could.

Much cooler and nicer here today, Bede. :)

I'll finish the archer and we need another city ASAP, the cowhill I suppose.

Research-wise we should go for that crummy Wheel, just to even it up with AC-bungle

I got it.

Btw, can we save the games after the starter of the game, I think I'm playing 3 german games now

Oh my... We play practically AW game and we don't have no iron no horses around... Nice...

Seeing a Carthagian warrior sitting and pooping in our lands and darkblue borders SE isn't exactly great. But at least we only need to have one foe at the time.

Rearrange tiles so we get that archer next turn.

2470bc - Kill the warrior.

2430bc - 2 more brown warriors shows up.

2390bc - Meet the Babs, they know CB and Masonry and doesn't want to trade any for IW.

2310bc - Berlin settler -> archer.

One enemy warrior dies pitifully against our spear, the other fortifies. They seem to like that special spot as a latrine?

2270bc - Leipzig founded -> warrior.

2 more brownies shows up (warriors)

Our warrior dies against the forted intruder, archer kills him and promotes to elite.

2230bc - Berlin archer -> archer.

2150bc - Rubbish, disease hits Berlin, expect another next turn.

Killed both warriors.

Try to get a warrior or 2 out to find other civs, we need to trade. Another spear and archer from Berlin before next settler would be good too.

I left research on the Wheel at 10%, if babs demands some gold, give it to them.

It can be done, but it ain't easy. :)

We do need to scout a little to find out where the resources are. It's a drag to find out the resource you needed centuries ago is 1 tile deep into the fog.

This is AW strategy - so take it FWIW - I usually get settler & spears out early on to bump the city count and help the economy. Two spear escorts if toward the AI, single spear escorts if away from the AI. Walls on the front lines, barracks in the back. The best odds are on defense in the ancient with no iron. Vet. AI archers lose 86% of the time against a vet. spear in a walled city on a hill. We only need enough archers to kill off the attempted pillage by the AI. That's the safest way to grow under the gun.

Peaceful ten turns on my watch.
Turn:
1) 2110BC: Disease strikes Berlin again.
2) 2070BC: Berlin builds archer, set production to to spear. Leipzig builds warrior, set production to barracks. Warrior sets out to scout. We need to find our enemies.
3) 2030BC: Not much. Workers irrigate FP south of Leipzig. Gonna irrigate cow to promote growth.
4) 1990BC: About the same.
5) 1950BC: Workers finish irrigation, now road.
6) 1910BC: Berlin builds spear --> spear. Babs border expands to the south. Scouting warrior sticks to hilltops.
7) 1870BC: Found Carthage. They're rather NW of our cities. They have silks just outside their borders. Purchase Masonry from Babs for 91g and 2gpt. We can now build walls.
8) 1830BC: Road cow.
9) 1790BC: Leipzig builds barracks, set production to spear. Begin to scout towars Babs.
10) 1730BC: Berlin builds spear, set production to settler, otherwise Berlin has happiness issues. Move to mountain south of Utica, our warrior is staring at a numidian merc.
On another note, Hammy doesn't look happy with us. He has four cities to our two.

Sorry bout that.
no biggie. and i'll give handy 24hrs from when i bumped it. nice scouting :) any idea where additional civ's are located? we need to find people and start trading.

Slider are @ 10/10 where I’ll leave them.
In an AW game we always research at max, but here I guess we’ll try to buy some stuff until they get too far ahead.

Pre Turn
Swap Berlin spear for Leipzig warrior so we can get the warrior out scouting.
Switch Berlin to a granary since I love granaries, perhaps too much. We’ll get gobs of settlers and workers from Berlin.

This may not be possible in my turns, but if we can get a couple of spears up to Carthage and park them next to the AI cities, they will whip their cities and pretty much destroy their economy. I use this in AW games as an opening oppression gambit when you start a game very near the AI. Carthage may be a little too far away, and our spears may not scare their NM’s enough to get them to whip.

IBT
Warrior near Carthage beats NM but loses to archer.

Turn 1 1725
More wines spotted E of Leipzig
We can get the wheel or CB for 90, but since we don’t have a settler available to direct toward the ponies there is no rush to buy it.

Turn 2 1700
Exploring
Babs are very close to us in the south

Turn 3 1675
Not much land left for Babylon and us to settle. They have wines too.
Carthage asks to talk. He wants 80 gold for peace.

Turn 4 1650
Spot spices in Babylonian territory only 4 tiles from Berlin.

Turn 5 1625
Sending the spear north to explore, not much else to see in the south. The warrior can poke around a little.
Iron is 7 tiles from Berlin.
Buy the wheel for 75 just in case we need to race to claim them. No ponies in sight. L
Select Alphabet since we can buy CB anytime we want for 90 gold.

IBT
Leipzig – spear – walls (we’ll need spears after this to go & grab the iron & hold it).

Turn 6 1600
Spear sets off to poke around Carthage a little and maybe oppress a city.

Turn 7 1575
Berlin grows.
I hired a scientist for 2 turns, which dropped alpha from 48 to 20 turns if you can believe it.

Turn 8 1550
Babylonia warrior shows up.
They still want 90 for CB.

IBT
Berlin – Granary – Settler (Bump lux to get the fpt up to 5 extra.)

Turn 9 1525
Not much.
Regular NM is 5 tiles from Leipzig.

Leipzig – walls – spear.

Turn 10
2 warriors approach Leipzig. Warriors versus walls is no problem, but watch for the pillage. Elite archer is in Leipzig.

Notes:
Since this is a war game I recommend we settle on top of the Iron. It is easier to protect that way and the city gets the hill defensive bonus.
We also need the wines to lower the lux tax.
Berlin can produce 4 turn settlers after we mine the gold hill.
FWIW, A temple in Leipzig grabs 2 BG’s and the wines.
While you wait for spears from Leipzig a couple more workers from Berlin to mine the hills would help our economy.
If there is a hill or mountain next to the Carthaginian capital, consider parking the exploring spear there to see if you can induce them to whip.
On a hunch there are no AI on the land mass S of the iron, I sent the spear to the north to try and get more contacts.
Leipzig will soon grow and you can hire a scientist & perhaps cut the alpha research time in half.
Good luck. :D
Picture is below.

lurker's comment: best comment I've seen in a while. :lol:[/delurk}

Preflight check: MM Berlin off irrigated wheat and onto an irrigated plain so growth and settler occur in 4T. this will prevent the granary from emptying at size 7.
Leipzip gets to work the irrigate FP wheat, as it’s losing a shield to corruption anyways.
Carthage is sending a warrior + archer towards us.
Buy Alpha from Babylon for 118g, they are already up writing.
I set research for Math @ max (50%, +0gpt, 17t)

IBT: We are considered the most Pathetic nation in the world by St. Augustine. Bastard, I never liked him.
Warrior/archer pair moves towards Leipzig.

T1: 1475BC Elite archer attacks warrior and kills it (4/5).

IBT: Carthage archer fortifies

T2: 1450BC Hire a scientist in Leipzig to take 4T off Math. Spear arrives on a Utica hill (roaded and mined).

NM shows up W of Leipzig. Babylon grabs our wine spot.

T3: 1425BC Elite archer kills archer but is redlined (1/5). Spear covers. Bump up lux slider.

IBT: NM runs away, Archer leaves Utica. Berlin settler -> worker

T4: 1400BC Spear in the N near Utica reveals that it was 2 Carthage archers. Settler + archer + spear head for iron bridge location. Worker follows as well so we can road to it.

IBT: Berlin: worker -> worker; Leipzig spear -> archer

T5: 1375BC moving

T6: 1350BC pillage a Carthage silk and spice with the 2 spears. Found Hamburg Bridge -> walls.

T7: 1325BC nada

IBT: 2 archers with NM cover show up near Hamburg Bridge; Berlin worker -> worker

T8: 1300BC Pillage another spice, other spear to hill connecting Utica to the empire. Worker to help road to bridge.

T9: 1275BC NM + 2 archers move next to Hamburg Bridge. Another NM is behind them.

IBT: thankfully, the archers + NM move for Leipzig and the road is completed.
Berlin worker -> settler

T10: 1250BC Road finishes. Vet spear moves to cover Leipzig. Not sure what to do with the workers so I leave them where they stand. Next player can move them as he sees fit (continue to iron or pinch wines?)

edit: actually, sorry, i left the twin pillaging spears unmoved as well.

twin pillagers :)

I have the save, but since i am up in 2 SGs I will probably play this one tomorrow.

What is the priority for the next city grapes or iron?

imho, i would go for the grapes as you can get there quickly (3 workers in the area can road there in 3T) + it cuts of babylon from expanding N, leaving them room in the S. carthage is not building any settlers that i can see that would threaten the iron. also, i think the booze will help with the luxtax and allow all 5 citizens in Leipzig work, reducing the time it takes to build archers/spears by 1T.

Do we know if Carthage is in GA? I couldn't figure from the report if they managed to use NM to kill.
It's nice if they waste GA in despotism, but on the other hand I hope they will never leave Despot government because we kill them sooner.
