Okay new game.

Fractal map, first random roll. Leader is Roosevelt (IND/ORG). Start looks interesting:

Unless there is some good food 2N1W this should open to interesting settling possibilities.

Hardwood trees in SE-corner of the screenshot, so we are north of equator. SE-SE is certainly tempting for a fast start, but so is getting max river tiles by going 2E first and taking it from there. I don't think settling on spices is great (loses extra turn, loses forest). SIP is also out of the question IMO, unless warrior move reveals more food.

Spoiler turn 5 :

T0.

Warrior 1NE. Reveals forest spices but no food.

First thing my gut tells me is to settle on the PH 2SE. Many advantages to this:

- Much faster start (2H city tile)

- Adds many new BFC tiles so there’s a good chance for more food (single-PH-sheep is pretty lame, even with FPs)

- Moving loses only 1 beaker (the Oasis can be worked 4 turns sooner, regaining 8 beakers on the lost 9)

- Capital will be closer to the Equator (fog-gazing tells us that we’re in the north of the map), so it will likely allow us to secure more land and/or have a closer target, and save on distance maintenance.

Only problem with 2SE is that capital might be crappy later, which is no big deal if there’s several AIs around, but can be a fairly big loss if the start turns out to be isolated or even semi-isolated. Might also be moving away from some strategic resources but these can always be grabbed later. Moving warrior/settler might also reveal some more food further away.

I definitely don’t want to SIP though – so final decision is move 2SE & decide on T1.

Moving 2SE answers all the previous concerns. The game is on.

So much for “settling closer to the Equator”… Probably going for AH, will stop and think a little. Looks like we’re either on a small island (iso or semi-iso) or in the northeastern corner of a larger continent. Either way we’ve got very nice land so isolation shouldn’t be a problem, even though I’d rather not play too many isolated starts on this thread.

Biggest problem with the settling decision is that much less land will be fogbusted than with SIP, so barbs will be an issue (couldn't have known on T0).

@sampsa

Settling on Spices could be a good option if we were in the Southern part of the map & with a low-commerce start, but neither is the case here. Otherwise I had a similar thinking scheme (see the spoiler unless you want to play ;))
