Gentlemen:

I am hoping someone here has encountered this issue before and knows how to work around it. Googling has not found this exact issue and none of the vanilla fixes others suggest (e.g. "run as administrator") have anything to do with it or help.

First understand I am running Windows 7 64 bit as an upgrade from Windows Vista.

I start with Civ IV CDs. The installer won't work from the discs, hanging and exiting when the second disk is inserted. So I copy all the files from both disks onto the same folder on the desktop, and install from there, by using "run as adminstrator" on Setup.exe

I choose English, accept terms, choose express install and for all users, and leave checked the "add to windows firewall exception list" box.

It begins the installation fine, and gets to the file

Wonders\UnitedNations.bik

Then I get the error message Setup.exe has stopped working, with these details -

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: setup.exe_InstallShield
Application Version: 12.0.0.49974
Application Timestamp: 4474907b
Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.1.7600.16385
Fault Module Timestamp: 4a5bdb3b
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 000335f2
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: cb5a
Additional Information 2: cb5adf8f5bac4bc39db6c83fb76b8021
Additional Information 3: 0958
Additional Information 4: 0958f37da6b5997fbb54d9041b29e83f

The result is fully reproducible, after a reboot no difference, etc.

Really pathetic, folks...

Short version of my last 5 days with 2k and HP tech support assistance with Civ IV and win7x64:

System Specs: HP dv7 HD, Dual Core 2.5gh, 4g RAM, 7200 500g HG, ATI Radeon HD 4200: [I could run 4 CIV games simlutaneously, IF, the game was compatible]

I have done the extreme (system recovery) and a miriad of the mundane such as removing patch 1.74 from program x86 folders. Last ditch effort: Download directX 9.0c to a folder on desktop. Right click on Civ IV icon from start menu, properties, and at the end of the the .exe file type; space -dx9.0c This will force the game to reverse compatible and run on Directx 9.0c which patch 1.74 was made for. You have to change the compatability settings to winXP serv pack 2, and run as administrator.

Still buggy (comp freezes after 2~3 min and I have to do a hard shut down). Going to try a couple of more items cause I hate to give up; such as run in a window vs. full screen (this sux though as you can not scroll with mouse) and finally, as the Tech support said "...we have tried everything, it just might not work on your system m8. Good news though, new Civ comes out in the fall, in the mean time, try Sim City Delux 4..."

SO, a couple of more tweaks, then I am going to cash in my chips, and play the game on my wifes older laptop. Every marrried man out there knows what that means; I wont be playing it much at all!

Time for a Pint of the Black Stuff, and check out this Sim City game (never played it, but sounds great) and look forward to the release of CIV V!

Thanks for the report. But if the take away is "it just doesn't work, but maybe Civ 5 will" they are smoking something if they think they will ever sell me software again...

I am 2 of the 72 views. If you call people pathetic, are you terribly surprised that no one gave you an answer?

So, here's some "pathetic" advice:

Your game disk is likely scratched or defective.

@IBstrummin:

See My Civ/Vista guide stickied at the top of this forum for directions to your issue. The install and patch process is the same for Win 7.

Nope, works fine in an XP machine...

Any more wild blind stabs by the uninformed?
