Oh ok, I thought you meant founding your religion in a city you haven't conquered yet so I was puzzled.

I'm usually a real warmonger, but I thought that would be too easy this game so I decided to try a peaceful game.
Also pretty easy (on Prince anyway).

Shoulda used the trick some people mentioned about preventing religions by parking a religious unit on their Holy Sites.
I had Rome all converted and was just working on Japan to finish the game when Rome spawned a Great Prophet, founded Judaism.
I didn't know they could wipe out my religion like that. I had to go back there.

I don't often play a religious game (except for GOTMs), and I was surprised that the Barbs didn't have any interest at all in Missionaries.
I would think the Barbs would kill some missionaries once in a while.

A holy site generates GP points for its owner. As long as a religion is available a GP will spawn then you can use it in the old holy city. It auto converts to your religion, along with all of your cities that have holy sites.

This is the kind of thing where even when I think I understand the mechanics, it turns out there are some major leftover ways of thinking from Civ V. I had no idea holy sites automatically got the religion on founding, will definitely not deprioritise them as much early game. I had been only placing where adjacency was good but if it saves faith and turns for self-conversion, that makes a difference

I decide to put my Save here even if the game didn't give me the victory. Around Turn 135 I had converted all remaining Civs to my religion and thought I would be granted the Religious Victory. I don't know but it seems the game didn't register it. Or have I missed something? I decided to play another 20 turns to remove all other remaining religion in each city, but still no victory.

Here a summary of how my game developed after Turn 100:
I defeated Dido on Turn 106 who gave me 3 Wonders (Great Bath, Hanging Gardens, Stonehenge) in her cities.
On turn 115 I took Haralds capital but didn't defeat him. It seems he has sneaked out a city on another Island or continent. Later I found it on Romes continent.
I fought down Tamar to one city that I converted and I had no problem to convert Matthias without having to fight him. My pilgrimage to Japan and Rome went easy as well with my strong Apostels (and no military support) and by Turn 135 I was the majority religion in all civs.

It was a fun game (except for the fact that I didn't get a win) that really made use of Pedro's strengths with the Rainforest bonuses. I didn't find much use for the Carnival in this game though.

How many cities did you settle or capture?
Settled 6, but the last one just before the victory.

What did you prioritize for research and policies?
Astrology and Theology, realized too late I had better start earlier on Cartography.

Did you bother with Culture?
Just with monuments and Choral music.

How did you pump your Faith?
4 HS with buildings and Scripture, and Mahabodi. Fire Goddess pantheon. Golden Classical and Medieval ages, both with Exodus of Evangelists. That plus Moksha's Patron Saint promotion makes terrifying apostles.

Were City-States helpful?
Jerusalem and Antioch helped, including with giving DF from suzerainty over them.

Any surprises you ran into, how did you deal with it?
I stumbled on Crater Lake before Vesuvius
3 other religions were founded on my landmass. I snuffed them out just with missionaries, before I even saw a missionary of theirs. For the last one I had to cross the ocean. And I overbuilt apostles, it seems.

Turn 192 Religious Victory
Not a smooth game by any means but still pretty good (for me). I lost about ten turns at the end because I missed that Hungary had lapsed back into Catholicism, and I was focusing too much on the New World.

Fortunately neither Hojo nor Trajan had made any effort with religion (Shinto was founded in Aquileia one turn before my apostles converted it) so the overseas conversion was much easier than it could have been.

How many cities did you settle or capture?
Just 6. My aim was for a peaceful win, and I was boxed in quite quickly.

What did you prioritize for research and policies?
Focus on faith and science output utilising the high-adjacency Holy Sites and Campuses.

Did you bother with Culture?
I took Choral Music to get Culture from Holy Sites, did not build a single Theatre Square.

How did you pump your Faith??
Mt Vesuvius Holy Site was a gift, and two other cities had good adjacencies for their Holy Sites. Then I chose the Mosque religious building and suzerained Jerusalem early.

Were City-States helpful?
Jerusalem suzerain was good for converting Shaka early. Papal Primacy allowed me to get a base of Zorastrians on Rome's continent before I could land my apostles.

Tamar took Antioch, and the resulting emergency was a nice way to earna few more envoys and make friends with Matthias.

Any surprises you ran into, how did you deal with it?
Early DoW by Georgia set me back a bnit as I had foolishly failed to build any walls or much of an army. A religious emergency between Georgia and Phoenicia when I converted Tyre was more of a boon than a pain, as it was declared rather late and they were in no position to reconvert their city, so it was a feww victory for me that massively helped in converting Georgia (who was the only AI who had her religion up and running before my missionaries came knocking).

Did you enjoy the game?
Absolutely. A nice quick win, and an eventful medieval era with a bunch of emergencies. The start was chaotic too between volcanic eruptions and barbarian hordes.

T146 RV - Easily could have cut off 20-30 turns by focusing on Cartography sooner. Peaceful game, never had war declared, allies with a few. Settled in place and got a Holy Site and Campus up quick - Settle SW near mountains for more Holy/Campus adjacency bonus - then Magnus and cards to get third to South near Horse - Really only needed those 3 - should have settled a coast with another.

-How many cities did you settle or capture? Settled 6 , none on the coast sadly as that added a lot of turns to get to Cartography



- What did you prioritize for research and policies? - Holy Site after seeing the wonder, then mining and writing. Made sure to do lots of the eureka and inspiration bonuses to keep ahead of the AI. God King until I got a Pantheon. - Focused on Culture to beeline Temples and then aim at the Religious government with Theocracy, which I only reached on t138 as my Apostle army was surrounding Japan's Buddhist heresy. Had double Campus and Holy Site cards running most of game - the +faith for buildings withing 7 turns of win so not much help there. Used the card to get 2 envoys on first envoy to great advantage.



- Did you bother with Culture? - Took Choral Music and built one Theater District fairly early - got the first envoy for Vilnius and won them with their missions plus one envoy.


- How did you pump your Faith?? - high adjacency HS districts - I avoided the volcano as I hate rebuilding and that spot kept getting better with every explosion for nice production/food. Took Missionary Zeal to move the units faster as part of founding.

I was first to get a GP for religion on T54 after using a few projects to speed it up - founded and pumped some missionaries out to closest neighbor while watching the GP race - Took out Georgia's religion 2 turns after founding - she managed to get two missionaries and it took a turn or two to wear them down. I didn't realize the HS trick and had wasted spreads on her HS cities...

I burned my first Apostle to evangelize and get Pilgrimage for the +2 faith per CS/foreign. 2nd apostle had the triple spread promotion so I sent him with a missionary to Norway and Hungary - Hungary had lost their capital and was close to losing their last 2 cities so easy convert - Norway had 3 missionaries that I killed with Apostle or they burned spreads - that finished off the mainland by T105 Finished Mahdobidi Temple a few turns before and got Debater to keep and a one with bonus spreads that took the last few CS in the area and then evangelized for Mosque, +3 faith and +1 Spread.

After Mosque and 3rd upgrade for Moshka, spent a few thousand banked faith to buy an apostle army and sailed out about T112 or so. Waited until T132 for Cartography as I had bee-lined to Printing as usual and forgot sailing... Kept myself occupied by converting all the barbarians on the the island and sending them home.

Finally got to Japan and killed final religion on T139 with triple spreads and killing their Missionary horde - Had to wait for enough units to go South, dodge hordes of barbarians sacking Rome, and finish the RV on T146.

I was a single turn away from getting the Mt St Michael wonder and my best HS (+10 adjacency, to double to +20)


- Were City-States helpful? Vilnius for culture, Jerusalem for the faith and pressure. Altanavarius (SP?) was useful for visibility. Got Fez the same turn as I killed a Japanese Missionary and converted 5 cites simultaneously - After of course!


- Any surprises you ran into, how did you deal with it? - Not really, had a barb trash my first HS on me which was annoying but not bad. Much easier than GOTM 83 which I could likely finish but waited so long to spread beyond my island that it will be a really long slog - Apostles are nearing 1,000 faith but I learned a lot doing it.



- Did you enjoy the game? Yes, never played Brazil and the adjacency bonuses were phenomenal. I only built 30% of what I planned. Prince feels like cheating now that I'm winning on Deity/Immortal most of the time... Great map - Thanks!

Note - Only 3 finished HS! Never built an IZ, which is a first for sure.

I've had Covid-!9, Coronavirus (first foreign civ to surrender were the Chinese purely by chance...), H1N1, and Mad Cow in games of late - Seems to be a theme. Didn't think of Handwashing yet - good one. I almost went with Self-Isolation for this game...

I finished this one many days ago, so can't remember much of anything. I think I conquered my whole continent, then converted a couple overseas cities when I got ocean access.

Because of the social distancing, I had lots of time left to screw around... played it again for a t151 domination victory, then again for a t197 culture victory, then again and was at t197 in a diplo attempt... which I will abandon because 6oTM85 is now available. Funny how the more I played, the worse I kept doing.
Only the first save is my "official" submission, with no map pre-knowledge or replays.

So in general terms, I had the following plan - play peacefully & befriend everyone (declaration of friendship) in order to not have my missionaries killed, found no more than 5 cities, reach a Classical Golden Age for the Exodus of the Evangelists belief, beeline Cartography (reach the other continents) and Reformed Church, build the Mahabodhi Temple for the 2 Apostles.

I managed to follow this plan and founded 5 cities, 2 of which on the coast for the Cartography bonus. I think it would have been enough to have only 3 cities, with a single one on the coast in order to escort missionaries using naval units. Not sure that the resources spent for the Cartography eureka were worth it - in this game or generally.
