Proposal:
Make GDR a standalone Unit which cannot be gained by upgrade from Modern Armor
Can only have 2 active GDR at one time
Increase production cost from 3000 to 4000

Rationale: GDR is very special Unit, which is different from tank Units. It's available in other part of tech tree and can be unlocked without Modern armor. Quantitative restrictions is only needed to avoid any abuse of its power (by analogy with Supercarrier). Increased production cost should emphasize it's power (it feels twice as stronger than modern armor which has 2500 Production Cost)

I think we could go a lot of different directions with this unit. My games so rarely progress this late, and my playtime so limited, it might be close to two RL years since I last saw one in action.

I like the "no upgrade" here -- flat cap is probably unnecessary, better to just make it require more strategic resources

I actually do use the GDR a decent amount as when I play SVs they can go into the later stages like this.

  • I don't think the upgrade removal is that meaningful. At the end of the day if you have gone deep on both the top and bottom parts of the tree you have earned the ability to take modern armor and upgrade them.
  • Production cost makes sense, GDRs are exceptional powerful for their cost, and I think this compares a bit better to nuclear weapons.
  • Unit limit: We do have a precedent with the supercarrier. Ultimately the uranium limit is a big one for a lot of runs (unless I'm doing autocracy), but I can respect some kind of limit, as GDRs are basically invincible super weapons if used properly. Literally they should never die, and will bowl over most anything else. Maybe the limit should be 3 or 4....but I do agree if you get like 6+ of these things nothing can stop you.

I can also note that we have had one attempt at a GDR nerf in congress many sessions ago, which did fail.

If I'd thought about this more in counterproposal stage, I might have suggested moving them to the Nuclear Fusion tech. They are a futuristic/fantasy unit, it feels wrong they unlock with ICBMs that very much do exist.
Oh well, next time :D

We moved both XCom and GDRs back a tech because people complained that there wasn't enough time to use them at their original techs.

Agreed, and honestly the change is good. I actually do use GDRs is sevearl of my games, not as a meme "hehe lets just f around", but as an actual unit.

And I think 1-2 GDRs is the right amount of power. They are a MASSIVE push on the battlefield, they knock down anything you throw at them, they mulch cities, and they DO NOT DIE. Even 2 is very useful. But once you get to the 5-6 category....now it is just a meme curb stomp....there is really no counter to that.

Let's hope I voted against that and purged it from my memory...

I'll say again that is a very bad proposal for people playing on large and huge maps.
Should you be allowed to maul down more cities at the same time just because the map is larger?

Note that the no-upgrade is already a considerable nerf. GDRs will not inherit the high level tanks' promotions, and won't get to benefit from +1 move from T-34.

Plus you likely aren't going to spend 4000 :c5production: on a unit.

I do all the time when your going science heavy, which is the north side of the tree. Once you get to robotics you not only have a killer robot but its also an incredibly good garrison if you need it.

It's more expensive than any building, wonder, or even Atomic Bombs. 2 of them are more expensive than a spaceship part (assuming Spaceship Factory present).

and they are worth every hammer.

I feel confident on this one as i have done a number of late game wars with GDRs. they are incredibly strong.

But did you need them to win?
