7 Modern Units

Very lovely! Now that carrier I modeled looks right!
Just curious, was that the Zuikaku model, or is that a differant model?

Just to play devil's advocate, while Danrel's carrier-reskin looks fantastic (and surely it's great work), the carrier is also clearly based on a WWII carrier.

The style of carrier in this model would have actually had a wooden deck, not a concrete or steel deck, which were (in fact) very rare in WWII. If the intent is to remodel a WWII carrier, then this skin should be given a wooden deck, not the one it has now.

That's what always bugs me about WWII movies with carriers in them... they always use modern carriers with concrete decks to make movies, but truth-be-told, over 90% of all carriers in WWII had wooden decks!

Just devil's advocate there... I love the reskin as-is, but if one were to be accurate, it'd have a wooden deck.

At the time, GM told us it was modeled after the Avenger, a British escort-carrier.
Hard to tell when someone does a reskin job... you can often make one model look like something completely differant with a reskin!

The Avengers were smaller escort carriers (with wooden decks ;) ), but that style of carrier was similar with a lot of WWII navies from many nations and sizes from small to large, so this model can definately be used in multiple roles.

Most American and British escort carriers were built in this style, many Japanese carriers were as-well, and the German Carriers Graf Zeppelin and Peter Strausser were also built very similar to this style (I'm using this model for a German carrier myself).

Yes, it was the Avenger.

I did not do the Japanese one..

Edit: Haha, must of done the wrong deck type then..

Yeah... wooden-decks on carriers was by-far the most common type of flight deck in WWII... only the larger/newer British carriers in WWII had armored flight decks (at the expense of much-smaller air-wings), and the Japanese Shinano had both armor and concrete for the flight deck, but it never really saw any action. Smaller (escort) or older British carriers (Ark Royal for instance) all had wooden decks too, like their contemporaries.

All the major Japanese and American carriers of WWII that saw action sported wooden flight decks. Concrete decks really only came into fashion after WWII.

Not that it's a huge issue in a game like Civ... I can live with concrete flight decks, but if you're trying to model WWII ships like the Zuikaku, Avenger, Ark Royal, Enterprise, Essex and all those escort carriers, they all had wooden decks, not concrete (still makes me cringe when I see concrete flight decks in WWII movies... so wrong).

EDIT:
Oh... and Matt... I can't help but notice a rather large footprint shadow of a bigger carrier underneath your avenger... might want to change the shadow type to destroyer for this carrier and possibly reduce the scale to size-up the shadow properly for this ship.

While you are right about the flightdeck being made of wood, it was most certanly tarred or to withstand the water and painted. So i think Danrels black texture is ok.

Not really...

Here's an actual photograph of the USS Enterprise in WWII... a color photo... you can plainly see the natural wood deck.

The flight deck was later stained blue, during camouflage experiments that gave her a unique deck stripe pattern... but many carriers in WWII sported natural wood decks.

Haha, that is all true.
I probably should have created a wooden deck, oh well.

On the shadow, that is really up to the modder I guess, this is before BTS and modular remember. :p

Dreadnought is awesome. Where could I find a button for it?

While trying to add the T-90, I ended up with this...

What did I do wrong? :(

Didn't try it with that particular unit, but the sight is familiar, use <KFM>Art/Units/Tank/Tank.kfm</KFM>
as the animation instead, that usually solves it.

Someone was asking about General Matt's reskinned Avenger carrier... this is where it's at.

Oh, and I didn't even realize it earlier, but the working P-38 is here (none of the others ever worked with the props)... this P-38 uses bomber animations.

Okay... I finally put this P-38 (with bomber animations) into the game and checked it out... indeed, the propellors spin and it looks great... the problem is that since it uses the bomber animation, when the fighter is in "Intercept" mode, if it chases after another aircraft, it "bombs" it's home city... you'll see the P-38 chase after the other aircraft with bombs trailing from the P-38 all the way back to it's home city.

Is there any fix to this? Any way to get both props to spin with fighter animation, or the proper intercept sequence to play if using the bomber animation?

i like the p-38 selection. the most distinct looking american fighter if you ask me. (although the P-40 with the teeth decal was unique looking as well.
(Downloaded and play testing wolfeshanze mod)

Right now the Wolfshanze Mod has the P-51 as the American fighter, the P-40 is the Chinese and Native American fighter and the P-47 is the Meso-American fighter.

I don't have the P-38 as an option in the Wolfshanze Mod... I tested it in my home version, and while it was properly animated and looked good, I don't like the fact that it "bombs" its' home city when intercepting enemy aircraft. I think I'll leave the P-51 as the American fighter for now until this gets resolved (if ever).

wolfshanze asked me some while ago if i can link the P38 to the mosquito animation, here we go (thanks for Refar for his (unknown) help in working with nifscope :) ).

It´s this model from here, i only linked it to the fighter/bomber animation, so no credits for this unit go to me. Needed are all three files in the zip, the mosquito animation itself is not included.

Oh sure... NOW you release the updated P-38... I'm sure you waited an hour after I released my latest Wolfshanze Mod on-purpose! :D

I've been wanting this fighter for America forever... my old Fighter Squadron in the USAF used to fly the P-38 (a little before my time... I'm not that old)... so I've always had a soft-spot for this plane.

Well... thanks a lot Coyote... even-if it's about an hour too late... oh well... there's always Wolfshanze Mod v2.73... :crazyeye:

P.S.
I just checked that P-38 file... he didn't include the needed animations, so to make it easier, the P-38 uses Coyote's Mosquito animations which can be found here.

I'd like to see a nice olive-green P-38 if you're up for it (and you know who I'm talking too).
