NewEgg has a new article with what it calls the Seven most exciting features of Beyond Earth

http://gamecrate.newegg.com/civilization-beyond-earth-exciting-details/

#7 The African Union faction in Beyond Earth behaves a lot like Civ V‘s Shoshone, expanding and grabbing territory early and then fiercely defending it.

#6 Siege Worms are powerful alien units that you won’t be able to dispatch during the early stages of the game, and their travels through the Earth can lead to the destruction of tile improvements.

#5 Many areas of the planet will begin the game covered by a green mist that will damage your units…but dedicating yourself to the Harmony Affinity can allow you to research technologies that mean the mists heal your forces instead.

#4 The full-body animated leaders will change visually depending on what Affinity they are pursuing, with Purity leaders beginning to wear clothing with classical Roman influences.

#3 Affinities aren’t selected in the same way as social policies or religions in previous Civilization titles. Instead Affinities develop naturally as the result of many choices made over the course of a game.

#2 The Virtues system allows players to pursue victory in different ways, even when they have the same Affinity. Combining Supremacy with the Might and Knowledge Virtues can make you a technological military powerhouse, while Supremacy plus Industry and Prosperity will crank up the production of your cities.

#1 Players who follow the Harmony Affinity will have a chance to use a “Xeno Titan” unit…which was described by Firaxis as “basically a Kaiju.”

Hmm, chemical weapons that heal my own troops and my own pet xeno-Godzillas, I am starting to think I might want to play around with Harmony first instead of Purity.

They also have a more in-depth article here:

Some highlights, picture of a Supremacy City:

Some details on the resources:

The impact of Affinity even extends into the world of resources, as the alien world sports three special materials that can only be fully exploited by those dedicated to particular Affinity paths. Floatstone enables a Purity player to build some of the game’s most advanced military units, the glowing mineral Firaxite is of special interest to those dedicated to Supremacy, and the planet’s biological Xenomass can be used by a Harmony player. In this way, the resources surrounding your territory can provide strong incentives to dedicate yourself to a particular Affinity, even if you had entered the game with a different plan in mind.

Some details on the militaries:

According to Pete the toughest “switch” to make later in the game would probably be from “Supremacy to Purity,” as the military of the former is focused on smaller numbers of advanced units boosted by their spatial relationship to each other and the latter is all about giant armies.

More details on the leaders and factions:

Daoming Sochua (Pan-Asian Cooperative)
Strengths – Culture, Energy, Science
Weaknesses – Military, Diplomacy, Religion

Samatar Jama Barre (People’s African Union)
Strengths – Diplomacy, Growth, Health
Weaknesses – Production, Religion

Kavitha Thakur (Kavithan Protectorate)
Strengths – Religion, Growth, Culture
Weaknesses – Military Training, Infrastructure, Science

Suzanne Marjorie Fielding (American Reclamation Corporation)
Strengths – Science, Infrastructure, Production
Weaknesses – Culture, Religion

It seems like factions actually having negative modifiers is making a comeback.

Thanks for sharing this article. So far, it's the most interesting I've read, because it gives a lot of new info, but also some insight into the "feel" of the game.
The leaders themselves look a little generic, and their names don't have a great hook to me, but I like that they're giving a lot of quotes read by them when you discover a technology. It should give the game a welcome alpha-centauresque look.
I really hope the factions' bonus won't be just static bonus, but something more interesting and unique.

#3 Affinities aren’t selected in the same way as social policies or religions in previous Civilization titles. Instead Affinities develop naturally as the result of many choices made over the course of a game.

These are GREAT news. There's something about choosing an Ideology in Civ 5 that feels too robotic. I'm eager to go Supremacy, but with some Harmony benefits along the way.

Well, if they do like last week tomorrow we should receive word from their Twitter and Facebook pages about a new look at either Purity or Supremacy so we might be getting a better look at those infantry units Friday.

Roman influences even to the non western factions?

Well, maybe it's the reviewer's interpretation.
Or maybe it's actually Roman influence. Let's not forget that many empires and authorities through Earth's history claimed to be legitimate heirs of Roman caesars. For example, both the "tsar" ("czar") and "kaiser" words derive from the Caesar title. The Ottoman sultans were known as Kaysar-i-Rûm ("Caesar of Rome") too. And Roman influence has been clear in architectural symbols of power everywhere, from Berlin to Washington DC.

Well there you are talking about eastern Europe.
Even with that broad definition, there are 2 factions that are definitely NOT 'western' (ie heavy european/mediterranean influence in their history)
KP (India)
PAC (China/Japan)
For them you have 2 possibilities
1. They instead look like their native classic dress
2. Purity involves rejecting some of the syncretic philosophical traditions of the East in favor of something like Humanism and so they adopt roman influences

All those listed features are definitely exciting, maybe except this:

#4 ...with Purity leaders beginning to wear clothing with classical Roman influences.

I'm just ambivalent about this. If anyone here studies history of fashion, has there ever been a case where an old fashion genre is re-used? And by re-used I mean after about a century or 2, if not a millenia. Costumes don't count. Other than that, #4 would also be exciting.

Actually, this could be a first step to the (modding) possibility to change leader graphics throughout a lenghty game.
If this holds, I fervently hope it would become a feature in CiVI too.

But for this game, it likely means we'll see adjusted graphics for the 8 leaders.
However, the prospect of having a visibly cyborg-enhanced Kozlov communicate with you in the latter stages of the game (or, for that matter, a xeno-adjusted Elodie) I find thrilling.

It depends on what they mean by "Roman-influenced." If the leader is actually wearing a toga, that has the potential for "ridiculous" written all over it.

There's going to be water in be. That's what it seems like in the supermacy screenshot. ..
There are rivers and oceans in nearly all the screenshots.

I decided to finally register after long periods of time browsing this site because of this question. The Regency or Empire style was lifted from Greco-Roman sculpture. In the 1950s, the corset and hoop skirts were briefly revived by designers like Christian Dior. Fashion is usually the effect of the world surrounding it, so I think makes sense that our choices effect our people's fashion in-game.

I hope this is not just four suits like the units, but real gradual change over time. It would look a bit weird talking to Supremacy when form one day to the next they go from looking like a Borg to looking like Master Control from Tron. Or a Harmony looking like a Furry one day and the Overmind the next.

My guess is they'll have three levels of change (considering that affinities kick in by the mid-game), to keep up with the rest of their society, but I don't expect drastic changes like what we see in units.

I don't mind that, it's just why the Roman-themed clothing for Purity leaders? Perhaps with purity, they just stick with the same appearance, which is fine by me. I also wish to see the harmony and supremacy leader changes too.
