I think I'll be going towards that. Anybody have any advice or anything? (I know, I know. I need to learn a lot first.)

Sounds like something that would suit you and your interests, Aimee. I don't have the cert, but I picked up CompTia's 'A+ Certification for Dummies' by Clarke and Tetz. There are more professional classes and books, but sounds like self-studying would be a good start for you.

If there are no classes you can take, there are still plenty of books available. It's not that hard. Just work from more than one book. And there's probably a lot of online sources you can study from.

At school there's an old unused computer on the counter in one of my classes. Sometimes at break I look at it trying to identify the parts and plug and unplug things. (the teacher said it was ok). It's not plugged in so I can't test it or anything but I learn.

Only thing I'm stuck on is this card sticking out where the USB ports are.

You could probably also use Newegg.com to try and identify some parts. If the card provides USB ports, it's just some adapter card. On the inside it might be PCI-express 1x or a PCI card.

well if its got usb ports it's pretty obvious what kind of card it is... (well it could be a motherboard but if you can't figure out which board is the motherboard you're hopeless).

The motherboard is the huge one attached to the side.

I knew what it was for, the name is what I was stuck.

I knew it was USB ports, I was just confused about what the card attached to it was called.
