I am playing my firsst decent game on emperor as the Romans, large continents map. First off, I declared war on both the English and Indians as soon as I found they were too close to me. Once I got legionaries, I began winning very quickly. I took over the smallest of the three continents by the mid-middle ages. This made defending my huge territory very easy, as we all know the AI is not capable of an amphibious assault. Had this been played on pangea, as I normally do, the outcome would have been quite different. I think I will use continents until I am really comfortable on emperor.

Anyway, I found that I had as little trouble keeping up in the tech race on emperor as I did on monarch. Granted, I seized more land than I normally do, but I still expected to be behind. I actually gained the lead quicker than I usually do. I think this was partially because the AI seemed extremely aggressive, not just against me, but against each other. THis slowed their tech progression a great deal. It seems the AI is more aggressive on emperor than monarch, but this could just be me.

Second, I finally saw the effects of communism on the AI since the last patch. I invaded another continent in the late industrial age because the egyptians seemed to be gaining too much power judging by their expanding empire. When I got there, I met almost no resisitence. I discovered that all but 3 of their cities were stuck at one pop. They had rushed so many units, that these cities were useless. This really needs to be fixed. This was far too easy. I want a reall challenge on emperor.

Well, I'm still playing on monarch, but it seems to me that the AI's aggressiveness varies. In the game I'm playing now, the entire world has been at peace for about 2000 years. Then, right around the discovery of steam power, Germany and Persia each decided that they didn't want to share their continents (with India and France respectively).

Other games I've played, the AIs would declare war at the drop of a hat.

This seems to happen many times because the human player stands up to a threat that the AI would have given into. Then alliances get signed, and it is all downhill from there.
