A few questions from a forum newbie

Hey everyone, first I would like to say that it's great to find people who still play this game. I'm currently going through my bi-annual Civilization re-obsession, and have a few questions that have been nagging me for a decade.

1) Does anyone know the circumstances that lead to the people "spontaneously gathering" to make a new addition to your palace? High Luxury rates? Peace? Population? I don't think I've ever had a 'complete' palace - one with the statues, roads, etc . . . Anyone have any theories or thoughts on this?

2) How about the circumstances that cause the 'SCHISM' message (The $THEM are a large and powerful civilization. However, rebel factions threaten to start a civil war. If your armies can capture their capital city,
the shock could split the country in two!) in the HELP.TXT file to pop up? I've only seen this once in all of my years of gametime. Is it random? Determined by civil unrest?

3)On a related topic, what about the GAPE message in the KING.TXT file? (You are invited to gape with^
awe and amazement as the^
$US demonstrate the wonders^
of $RPLC1. WARNING: Absolutely^
no scribes will be allowed.) I've never seen this one. Can anyone shed some light upon it?

Again, it was great to find this forum. Civilization and Pirates! Gold are the only two games that I've come back to over and over again - I don't think it's a coincidence that they were both created by the same man. Later,

1. Civilization score, I believe.
2. You will only see this if the most powerful civ on the planet declares war on you. Since YOU are usually the most powerful, it's not surprising you don't see this often. If you want to see it, trying playing the English on the Earth map... hehe.
3. I have never seen this message in the game, but it is definitely in the king.txt file. It was probably a feature that was taken out.

I've had a complete palace a few times - I have no idea what causes them to add a bit, but it seems that building a wonder is one trigger. Sometimes I've had additions every few turns, then it slows right down again. But it's not happiness/luxury rate, 'cos I don't tend to have that very high.

The gaping in wonder message comes up if they find a tech which you don't have. Though not always, and you don't have to be in contact with them to get it, os maybe there's a random element. Or maybe it's only certain techs, when you might want to know it has been found (so you can steal it!)

I think that they improve your palace if your civ is getting better (cities growing, more income, a lot of tech researching, or if you destroy other civs rapidly) I usually get it if I am the best CIV there is (the one with 4 advisors)

Not sure what actually makes them build you better palace, have to do some experimenting.

Alright, I have a game going on Prince level where I've managed to eliminate all civs except for one Aztec city which I have surrounded by Diplomats, effectively eliminating all opposition. My Palace has all upgrades except it has trees lining the road.

Everytime that I got a Wonder, an addition to the Palace was offered. Now that all the Wonders in the World have been researched, additions are few and far between. I have a fully built spaceship ready to launch, but I think that I'll go a bit further and see if total pop. has any effect on it. Screwing around with luxuries seems to have no effect.

Also, I was reading a bit in the Civ2 thread, and for the revolution to occur in Civ 1 there are 4 requirements:

1) The other Civ must be larger than you,
2) It must have at least 4 cities + capital.
3) Must be before 1750 AD
4) Must be 6 or less civs in the game

Here's the link to the thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/Forum1/HTML/000301.html

TrajanDacicus, that's right about the schism thing. And you've definitely got the right strategy for getting a good score. If you want to pump your score up more, try focusing on future tech. Get a bunch of your maxed-out cities and set them to building a useless improvement like SDI defense or courthouse (you are in democracy, right?). As soon as it is built, sell it and build another. If you have a lot of these cities, that should be enough income to cover your upkeep costs, so you can set science 100% tax 0% luxuries 0%. The boost in civ-score might just be what you need to get the rest of your palace finished.

By the way, I never build a palace. I prefer to move through the game quickly so I shut off everything that slows it down.

I think that the palace is directly connected with your population, and you get new bits when you reach milestone populations.
(Hmm. Have to try and find some time to test this!)
I know when I played 'population challenge' vs my flatmate on the earth map we would usually max out the palace (or come pretty close before the b***y bugs started to bite)

I maxed out the palace just recently and the only things I find that trigger a palace improvement are:

1. Wonders
2. Destroying a civilization
3. Starting or capturing cities

I haven't found that gaining technologies has had much of an effect.
