A few questions regarding MP Conquests

Hi.
Me and a friend recently got Conquests and have been playing MP a bit.
Just custom games filled up with AI's.

Anyway, it works fine enough, I just have a few gameplay related problems/questions:

For one thing, the AI seems to REALLY hate me.
Whenever I spot a neighbour, it typically takes 2-3 turns from initial contact to a declaration of war upon me.
Sometimes they'll just start asking for money/research, and of course I can give them what they want, but then they immediately start asking for more every damn turn, and giving away ~30-50 gold every turn early in the game just isn't a good way to start ;)
Other times, they'll just declare war without a word.
And once in a while, I'll actually make friends with them and trade a bit, then out of nowhere, declaration of war.

The funny thing is, this tends to only happen to me, never my friend, and I typically start out stronger, especially in terms of military might, doesn't make any sense to me :confused:

During all the games we've played, there's been a total of ONE lousy Civ I've been at war with, I managed to keep my friendship with India once.
Was is fun and all, but when you're constantly at war with 3-4 other civs, it takes a severe toll on research/expansion.

So, anyone know of a particular reason for this? Since it only happens to me and never my friend, I figure there's something Im doing that annoys people, I just don't know what.


Secondly, we always start way far from each other, even if we go France/Germany or some similar start, with culturally linked start positions, we tend to get about as far away from each other as possible.
Or we just try random starts, same thing, always on the opposite ends of the map.
Is this just a built in "feature" or are we just having infinite bad luck?
