I'm not sure if it's because of the last patch or not, but since then almost all denunciations have come from leaders with a status of "friendly". We have absolutely no negative relations, they just denounce me for no reason. Am I the only one having trouble making friends or is anybody else having this issue?

I found when they are being backstabbers no negative modifiers will show.
But even then an aggressive friend who thinks ur weak will DoW a lot in the new patch.

1) <as stated above> they are deceptive -> they only pretend to be friendly and hide all negatives
2) they have better friend who do not like you and asked them to backstab you
3) I don't know if it is possible, but maybe they are afraid of somebody and he demanded on them denouciation?
4) maybe sometimes it is just random? :P

Civ 5 Tip # 147 - Treat em mean and keep em keen...

"Hate him back, it works for me..."

Seriously, this one game I decided that I would fully embrace my inner Schafer... upon getting Chain Denounced by every other AI civ and going from universally good relations with everyone to universally bad ones, I proceeded to, without fail, denounce anybody and everybody the second that their denounciation of me expired.

Within two game sessions, everyone loved me again because all of the denounce spam flying around. Just denounce everyone, and don't enter into any agreements (not even Open Borders). Lulziest game I've ever had... :D

I can't say I've had this problem very often. The only time I can remember was during a diplo victory, I bought out 7 city-states allied to a friend. That changed his attitude quickly and he denounced me. Aside from that, I can't think of much. Maybe I had a neighbor expand to me and then want my land as well, but that's nothing specific to a post-patch game. Maybe they could tone down the desires your territory modifier or counterbalance it if you trade continuously for a long time (maybe 30+ turns of trading offsets it as long as those deals don't lapse for more than 5 turns or something like that). Still, in the same situation, I'd likely view my nearest neighbors as potential targets (certainly wouldn't sign RAs with them, for example).

As a warmonger, I must say that denouncing always makes me smile. I tend to smile to myself and say "ooh, you didn't want to bring yourself to my attention matey!"

Yeah, denouncing me usually ends with me replying "cake or death".
