This has been talked about to death on the 2K forum. Darius speaks Aramaic, which wasn't the language the 'common' people in the Persian empire spoke, but it was the offical government and diplomatic language. When you came to Darius' court he would adress you in Aramaic.

So although it isn't very relevant (but those Iranians can get pretty uptight about their country and heritage), it is actually correct.

ANYWHERE and ANYTIME we dosent spoke aramic.
we have a language to name Hakhamaneshi. its not important that what you say to hakhamaneshi.
its important that even we iranians edited arabic language
it was without any dot in original.

Wu has a pretty good Mandarin. No accent or anything. Really standard. She tends to use simple terms though, as if she was speaking to a child (my opinion).

Napoleon is pretty full of himself (La France vous offre cette proposition EXTRAORDINAIRE/France is giving you this excellent deal), but, like Wu, has little to no accent (at least, none that I can really distinguish. Admittingly, I don't live in France, but I live in the French portion of Canada, so I speak French everyday). I kinda expected him to sound more... French. Maybe it's just me.

I can understand the washington, elizabeth, caesar and napoleon. if isabella makes her return soon, ill be able to understand her too.

the above poster makes a good point, nappy doesnt sound very French, which IMO makes sense since he's not really French anyways

And definitely not what royalty would've spoken during the Tang Zhou Dynasty.

Similar story with Ramkhamhaeng, who speaks modern standard vernacular Thai.

is he supposed to sound corsican then? i think what's being pointed out is that he just doesnt sound very parisien. for all we know they just hired some french speaker out of quebec and made him read the lines, when the voice actor should of had a much more strong france accent (pursing the lips vs not kind of deal)

To reduce production costs, Firaxis used Google Translate lol...

But seriously, I think it would be best if the characters did not speak at all but rather have a written dialogue. This way nobody will get offended about language issues.

One thing I really hate is that the translation of what they're saying simply isn't right. Well, there are multiple and completely different translations for every thing the leaders say. Sometimes it's translated right, most of the times it's not.

Aramaic was the lingua franca of the ancient Persian empire, look it up.

You know I was thinking this myself. I understand Parisian/France French well but some of the heavy nasally accented french can be hard to follow - for me I find it a bit mumbly - but then again I always find Quebecois a tad hard to follow at times. I think he may very well be a voice actor from Quebec.

Augustus never called himself Augustus: a wise man that never forgot how his uncle ended.

Yup it wasn't until the late empire when the Ceasars were called Augustuses. I remeber reading a tribute to Valentinian I by the senate and all it was - 300 repetitions of "Augusti! Augusti!, Augusti Magni!."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darius_I :

Darius chose Aramaic as a common language, which soon spread throughout the empire. However, Darius gathered a group of scholars to create a separate language system only used for Persis and the Persians, which was called Aryan script which was only used during official inscriptions.

If you want to correct me first learn the history of persia.

Napoleon is Corsican and to his contemporaries in France, he spoke with an accent

HOW IS THIS FACT NOT KNOWN TO SOME OF YOU

wikipedia said:
Napoleon's noble, moderately affluent background and family connections afforded him greater opportunities to study than were available to a typical Corsican of the time.[6] In January 1779, Napoleon was enrolled at a religious school in Autun, mainland France, to learn French, and in May he was admitted to a military academy at Brienne-le-Château.[7] He spoke with a marked Corsican accent and never learned to spell properly.[8] Napoleon was teased by other students and Civfanatic posters for his accent and applied himself to reading.

Wu has a pretty good Mandarin. No accent or anything. Really standard. <snip>

1. Her accent is the modern putonghua, which didn't exist until it is formalized in recent years.
2. Her utterance is horrible: completely stilted and sound as if she is reading off a piece of paper.
3. Her inflections are horrible, not a way befitting for an emperor.
4. The script is horrible. The mandarin used is so utterly mundane it sounds as if she is some peasant women.

Why can't firaxis hire a proper historian to come up with historical authentic scripts? History professors in chinese universities come at a dime a dozen.

I am sorry, but Firaxis did a terrible job with the leaders scripts and VO.

So really guys what is it?

One person says, OMG Darius speaks Arabic. How is that possible, he should not speak Arabic because Persians are not Arabs :(

The other says, nonono you are wrong he spoke Aramaic and he should because that is the language they spoke at court in his time :goodjob:

Then a third comes in, or was it the first? Hey guys Darius is speaking Aramaic but he should speak Farsi. Persians speak Farsi, simple

Just waiting for a fourth who says you are all wrong Darius speaks Arabic but should speak Russian! Not because there is a reason for it but just to make stuff more complex.

If you wait long enough I am sure Darius speaks Mandarin with a Corsican accent... :mischief:

I give up, make up your mind!

The spoken language at time of Darius was probably Aramaic. Since large chunks of the Empire spoke this Semetic language.

However Darius himself may not have spoken Aramaic in his private court and his house hold.
