i don't know if this is a tips/strategies post or not, but i wanted to put it up here for all the supergeeks (like me) who play civ 4 a lot. if you want to "expand" the game a little bit, you can add an infinite number of civilizations through the custom game mode, by borrowing the leader traits from another leader, already in the game, and using the name and city names from another civilization. for example, i play the canadians and the australians a lot (b/c i like and can pronounce the city names well). i use some person from canadian or australian history (or those nations' current leaders, pm stephen harper and pm john howard, respectively) as my leader name and then borrow city names. it's not quite like brand new civs, but it's still kind of a new twist if you're burned out on all the old civs. the cities for canada and australia are (by the way, you can get leader information and city names for any country now in existence off the internet easily, by googling [country name] city population): canada - ottawa, toronto, montreal, vancouver, calgary, edmonton, quebec, hamilton, winnipeg, london (only when ai isn't playing an english leader), kitchener, st. catherine's, halifax, windsor, victoria, oshawa, saskatoon, regina, st. john's, sherbrooke, sudbury, abbotsford, kingston, saguenay, barrie, etc. australia - canberra, sydney, melbourne, brisbane, perth, adelaide, gold coast, newcastle, gosford, wollongong, sunshine coast, geelong, hobart, townsville, cairns, toowoomba, darwin, launceston, albury, wodonga, ballarat, bendigo, burnie, devonport, mandurah, etc. yours truly, smokey [them] bones, jr.

You do know that there are mods around for other countries not in the game, including an excellent one for Canada, right? They're available in the Creation and Customization forum, New Civilizations sub-forum. Besides different names for the civ, leader, and cities, many have additional features such as unique units and buildings, wonders, even custom ambient sounds and music.

dear sisiutil,

no, i did not know that. i don't know much at all about civ 4, to be honest, having just bought the game recently from a target that still carries it.

anyway, thanks. how do i get to those mods?

The New Civilizations forum is here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=179&page=2&order=desc

The Canada Mod, which I just love, is available here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=138477

And there's an Australian mod too, but not being an Aussie, I haven't tried it yet: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=146845

thanks, sisiutil. by the way, what does sisiutil stand for?

smokey
Sisiutil is my own misspelling--to ensure I can use it on any message board or e-mail system--of the name of a legendary creature in Nootka mythology (they're the people native to the west coast of Vancouver Island). It has some conceptual parallels to the Taoist concept of yin and yang; I consider myself a Taoist, and I find that sort of cross-cultural connection very intriguing.

Google the proper spelling, sisiutl, and you'll find more information about it. My av is a representation of the creature, and one you might come across if you put the name in Google images.
