A Little Disappointed

I bought this game hoping to rekindle my interest in gaming, since it has waned somewhat recently.

I've been playing a game of Gal Civ 2 for over 5 hours now, and I can't help but feel a little disappointed. The game seems to me to play like a simplifed version of Alpha Centauri in space. It just feels like the gameplay mechanics are very similar to AC but Galactic Civilizations 2 seems to have far fewer options and things to do in general. This is partly due to the setting (space) which eliminates the need for terraforming (a big part of AC) and also gives fewer options for expansion (planets as opposed to flexible placement of cities). Many parts of AC also seem more fleshed out, for example combat. In AC factors like terrain type and elevation all make a difference to the outcome of battles, and when you add in elements like bombardment and special abilities, the options increase exponentially.

Also, so far i've noticed that there are numerous long stretches of gameplay where nothing much (of interest) happens. In AC it always seemed like there was something important to do, eg. scouting, finding pods, fighting (native lifeforms and other factions), terraforming, building secret projects, etc.

Another thing that is slightly disappointing for me is the tech tree. Each branch of the tech tree seems a little too isolated from the rest (eg, laser leads to laser 2 to laser 3 etc. AC tended to have a more organic feel to the path through the technologies.

Don't get me wrong, Gal Civ 2 is a good game, but i can't help feeling that I'm just playing AC with fewer options which makes me feel like i have no reason to play Gal Civ instead of AC.

Does anyone else feel the same way, or disagree?

Am i being a bit to hasty in reaching the conclusions above? Does the game change remarkably later in the game?

Please remember that these are just my opinions, I'm not attempting to be inflammatory.

I'm not sure GalCiv2 reminds me of SMAC at all if only because one is space-based and the other is planetary tile based. There are periods of seemingly doing nothing, but if you have your sliders set correctly you should at least be cranking out constructors or more colony ships every couple of turns, depending on how many colonies you have. Planning ahead with your starbases will make everything work better later on. For me GC2 is like Moo2 and SMAC is simply Civ. Different, but all turn-based which is good.

The tech tree takes a bit of time to warm up to IMO. On the plus side you don't have to research everything. Leave an entire area of research for trading with the AI or for stealing through conquest. I enjoy being able to focus on one avenue now, but didn't at first.

In conclusion....if you play GC2 expecting SMAC I think you'll be disappointed. 2 different animals, but of the same species. Play CivIV or follow my sig (cheap plug) to play SMAC type games. Play GC2 for Moo type.

True.

Thing is, I started playing expecting something totally different to SMAC/Civ, but i quickly noticed that Gal Civ is very similar to those games. This led to the inevitable and constant comparisons in my mind...

It just seems like there is more depth to AC than Gal Civ 2.

In fairness to all games, nothing compares to SMAC for me so I don't even try to make anything its equal.

Play GC2 for what it is and you'll love it, or at least develop serious feelings for it. Change up your playing style, mess with the settings if things seem too boring, and experiment. 5 hours might not be enough to give it a fair shake.

GC2 is more like the MOO series. Don't think of SMAC while playing GC2, of course you'll be dissapointed.

I really like Galciv2 (and the original) because of its AI. I found SMAC's AI to be pretty lackluster overall. It does take a little while before you really get to know the game well enough that you can play on the higher levels to enjoy it, though.

The only aspect that is similar to SMAC is that it's TBS. You can't directly compare the two in terms of gameplay cause one is planet based and the other space based.
GalCiv2 has a lot of Depth but a different kind of what there is in SMAC or Civ.

Different games differentent values....
