Okay, I use a free program called Audacity for producing. How do you add reverb? I don't see an option. Do I need another program? I don't use trials ;)

P.S. Moderators, if this belongs in computers, please move it. I

I know the answer to this question, but Im going running now...I'll edit this later.

You ought to consider getting a real program though. Audacity is great for sound conversion, but as a production tool, its not good at all.

Yeah, I suppose. It's aquedate (spelling?) for me.

Any suggestions?

Try FLStudio. I've used it for a while, and it absolutely kicks donkey.

It totally depends on your budget. Protools and Cubase are great programs. For a lower budget, you might try Garageband.

I'll be honest, I wouldnt sink a dime more into any production software until you improve the product you're trying to produce. 1,000 bucks worth of programs wont cover up a crappy song

truth. a gold dipped turd is still a turd.

thank you (10char)

and thats why people buy stuff they percieve as having more value even if it doesnt have any more actual value. they believe they can seperate out the value and utility of one part of it but they cant.

What doesnt apply to music?

i was reffering to the golden turd rule

while i'd rather have a golden turd than a turd, i'd still take a song by the mountain goats over nickelback.

No, the golden turd rule is right on. A turd is a turd is a turd, no matter how much production effects you invest in.

The most important priority for a Musician is to write good songs and perform them well. If you're on a budget, only spend money on things that will improve those 2 tasks at first (Private lessons, Monitors, Instrument upgrades)

Too many young bands (mostly in the Punk and Indie scenes) think that they can disguise a lack of solid musicianship by clever production tricks in the studio, or by marketing, or what have you. Thats polishing a turd. Its wrong, and you'll be exposed for it.

Its much better to be a tight, well-rehersed group with clever, catchy songs on a tape recorder than trying to produce awful music with Protools Studio. You would be wasting your time and money. If the orginial product is good, its much easier to get the money and professionals to polish it up. If your product sucks, no professional or tool can save it.

If you dip a turd in gold... it's a waste of good gold :-/

thats why the golden turd rule is multifaceted. You are using resources that could be better spend on something. Especially if the contribution of resources don't increase the actual value of the end product.

would you listen to me? haha.

i'd rather have a golden covered turd than a non golden turd, but i'd rather have a good song over a polished one, haha.

(and most punk and indie has lo-fi quality too, haha. see: the mountain goats)

why would you cover your turd in gold? you're wasting your gold.

if a punk or indie band wants lo-fi quality why are they spending all that money?

punk and indie bands don't spend a lot of money.
unless of course you're reffering to what the labels sell as "indie".

indie just means independant, there is no sound associated with it usually.

i amend the question: would you rather have a turd or a golden turd, if it meant using your own gold to make it golden.

well if they dont spend all that money, no one here is talking about it. Punk and Lo-Fi are beyond the scope because, as you claim, they dont spend a lot of money.

We are talking about people that spend money to try and improve something that cant be improved with money. Good production equipment doesnt make for good songs.
