A Portugal Game

Maybe I'll write one sometime. I almost exclusively play on Epic however, so my experiences and strategies can sometimes be hard to translate into a shorter game length.

Here is a list of civs I would consider viable for domination, at least theoretically:

China
Greece
Indians (theoretical, core is meh)
Persians
Romans
Tamils (this one is a stretch at best)
Byzantines
Japanese
Vikings (core is ok, rest of stability map is bleh)
Arabs
Indonesians (I've seen it done, don't know if I could do it)
Spanish
French
English
Germans (pretty much have to win before Prussian spawn, very iffy)
Russians (easymode)
Polish (rely on golden age UP)
Portuguese (did it on Marathon once, don't know if viable on slower settings)
Italians (iffy)
Turks (did on Marathon, not sure)
Dutch (maaayyyybbbe)
Prussians (random shrinking core is irritating, BTW)
Americans (easymode)
Brazilians

If you'd like to request one. go ahead, though I request you pick one that I'm at least half confident is viable.
I'd really like to see a Chinese domination game. But a Spanish, French or English domination game would also be nice, they are more probable and we all want to see successful games.

Thank you, dear Fresol, for considering the Moors game, I'm already curious :)

Btw, I like your alternative approach with city settlement, especially Santiago de Cuba and Buenos Aires, what a sweet little spanish robbery
Yeah one thing that can make your game more interesting and favorable is adding in a bit of unhistorical gameplay.

Moors :D

We have quite a few slaves. Slaves are quite an asset, they can build slave plantations on consumption(saving many worker turns and with better output), or they can be traded to colonial civilizations for a high price(100~200 each). In our game, only Spain has started colonizing(Netherlands to a lesser extent), so there's not much chance to sell these slaves.

Golden Age for 2/3 UHV triggered. Luckily no one declares war on us. From my past experience GA from UHV is often accompanied by DoWs. Can someone confirm this?

Whatever Spain asks, we'll do it.

We're on full research mode! This is what I like about Regent.

Colombo settled! It's not considered Asian though(I think the Asia rectangle should be enlarged to include these exceptions). And Catholicism doesn't spread here.

Look at the amount of commerce we get from trade routes!

Adopting Naval Dominance for double Fetoria construction speed. Mercantilism decreases instability from oversea colonies but I'm afraid it'll destroy our economy.

"Dili" settled, for no obvious reason(other than it's historical for Portugal). It's not considered Asian either.

Some screenshots I posted in the bug report thread to show the city culture expansion bug.

Tech trades to beef up our score. Meanwhile I keep all the cities growing.

As the pope, I'm trying to send inquisition to Spain.

It fails.

They hold no grudge against us. Signing DP ensures our safety.

Liberalism bulbing Chemistry in 1675. I remember in older revisions, Liberalism used to be discovered by ~1500.

The last turn of our Golden Age.

Great Merchants on and on.

Incompatible? Outdated? Bleh!

Victory is ours!

8+ hours played... Normally it should take you only 2-4 hours to finish. But with my slow laptop and segmented play time(and screenshots!) it took me double the time(and more sessions).

There are other UHV posts on Portugal in the forum which provide useful alternative strategies. Use the search function to look for them if you are interested. Good luck gaming!

Indies captured Chinese Beijing? :goodjob:

A demand from the mighty Spanish queen. I have no options but to agree. Peace between the 2 nations should be maintained at all costs.

Many things changed since this excellent guide was written, but overall direction is still the same as 3 years ago. On 600 AD start it makes sense to capture Pagan and switch to Secularism to avoid religious disunity or constant care about Catholicism and later Reformation. Main challenge is Spain -- it is not possible to always maintain peace no matter what you do. Human Portugal needs to simply trigger Conquerors events and after vassalizing Inca and Aztecs bring troops back as soon as possible. As use espionage to destroy Spanish Iron. After I won my Spanish war -- it was more of a laid back game and score was more or less comparable to this 2015 victory :)
