A REALLY simple question...

OK, as the title says, this is a REALLY simple question. When I start a new game, everything is black, apart from my units and a few other features, eg random trees. I am very familiar with previous Civilisation games and it really isn't just that I haven't discovered that area yet as it never recedes, it just always stays black. Is this supposed to happen? Or am I just misinterpreting a new feature introduced for Civ 4?
I'd be grateful for any light shed on this as it makes the game completely unplayable and I'm desperate to get stuck in!

It's a common bug that occurs mostly with low-end graphic cards or computers that have in-built graphics (IGP). Your graphics card needs to support hardware TnL, intergrated ones like some Intels (like Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller (Intel(R) 82852/55 Graphics Controller) do not support this so the game will display a black screen.

The latest patch helped some people with this issue, so patch it if you haven't already done so. Be sure that all the DirectX and graphic drivers are up to date.
