A suggestion

That's bad idea IMHO. But there could be some spam-filters which automatically bans user if spamming. (OK it was a bad idea;))

We are not making any changes to the board at this time, because vB 3.0 is around the corner...

vB 3.0 has this feature built-in I think.

Dumb idea.

You will end up with this kind of post:

Ahh, but techincally that's only a two-word post :mischief:

So then once we get vB 3.0 we'll have this feature? If so, do you know what the limit will probably be?

Oh, and I just realized the irony that if this feature were used at CFC right now, ainwood's first post would probably be too short. (Was that intentional?)

I realized that about his post too, and I also wonder the same thing :)

ainwood, break up that "....." into several chunks and you've got quite a few words.

Hence the " :mischief: ". ;)

And WillJ - the other irony is that yourself and Hygro contributed to the other form of (insidious) spamming by sending the thread off on a vaguely tangential direction that contributes very little to the discussion. :p

The thing is, if someone wants to make a post, but it's too short, he/she justs adds a bunch of characters. Then, when a moderator looks at the post, he'll have to decide whether or not the post is spam (it is possible that it's not, and the user couldn't really make it longer without adding nonsense characters). In other words, the character limit would be pointless, IMO.
Although I have doubts about effectiveness of this spam detection system, there could be an agreement to fill up a message with certain characters that are globally considered to be "fill-up-characters". Just like AoA has demonstrated: If every (reasonable) short message comes with "----" as fill-ups, no reader would get the idea that junk has been added to a post. Such "---" could become as common as any abbreviation used on the site. By the way, writing out abbreviations could extend a message, too.
