A tight fit (Prince level BtS SG, tiny, max. AI)

Tech wise I would go BW then for AH if we havent got any resources then go for IW, we will need AH for sheep so shouldn't waste time on IW if not necessary. More grassland may mean greater % chance of resources but means less trees to chop to make units.
As I said in my sign up thread I am going to be without game until 28th so please move me down the roster a couple of slots.

mrwhite89 --> up, please start the game with 20 turns!
TheLastOne36 --> on deck, please play 15 turns

Well, chopping is a one-time gain, and while it is a nice gain we have a floodplain (+2 food) and a bunch of hills that we can spend our food surplus on.

As I said before I'd move the settler one tile to the SE (num-pad 1), so that the town is one the river (see attachment), in case this allows a second city up north. Going east might also open enough space (in the west), but the forest means that we would not be able to found on turn 1.
If we so move, then the sheep are not in the capital's 21, and AH is not the top priority. If we keep the sheep in the 21, then the order should be BW, AH, IW indeed :)

I think the move a good gamble, since losing the sheep and marble in the 21 is nearly balanced by the tiles gained (think of the research on the river, too!), and a second city pays three times the price in hammers and gold of what we lose. I'd place the second city (for which we should start producing the settler ASAP, running the floodplains tile) on the hut. This is tentative, obviously, as we do not yet know the land beyond the hut.

By going south, we're missing out on a plains hill, Marble and a Sheep? Not to mention our cap will be culture pressured as if we go south, the ai will probably settle nearby. The computer sets you up to settle in place to prevent this from happening.

I agree. With the increased number of CIvs in this game, we should settle in place. I also want to add that in the first 20 turns or so, there might be one or two unprotected AI cities, since they might have their scouts/warriors out fog-busting. Is everybody cool with me taking advantage of this opportunity to clear some real estate by razing these unprotected cities?

I think we have to take a gamble and decide if moving, and therefore gaining a second city to settle is better than settling in place and going all out on a rush.
My vote is to settle in place, we don't know if anyone is to the west or how much free space will be available once everybody has settled.

I would favour settling on spot. I was a bit worrried for same reasons about moving south. I would say take out a city early if you can but remember only have about eight turns before AI will have time to build another unit to defend city, which is I hoep what we plan to do.

Where's the save?

Oh dear :(

NOTE: I will be without internet access for at least 36 hours. I will definitely be back on in 3 days time.

Looks like we'll have to wait a few days to get this one started

Lurker's comment: Except for hidden tiles and resources, 1W has better production than in-place, yet still has plenty of flats for cottages or farms.

So, uh.......Is this game dead on arrival?

I think is just the problem that the guy who has the saves that were mentioned is without internet access for a few days hence hasn't yet realised he hasn't posted the saves

We either wait for him to recover his internet and post the save or you could just roll another one and we play from there? We can always go back to the original if there is an issue.

I guess we should give him the 3 days he needed before going ahead with our own start. Hopefully some time tomorrow.....

ok. i havven't been on for some time. So i guess that was a good thing? :p

we don't have room for a second city. (or we could have the most culture pressed city ever...) so settle in place, conquer nearest two civs is my vote.

That's my plan. I know I can raze one city right off the bat, but hopefully will get 2.

Check our civ again - there will be no culture pressure coming OUR way ;) We likely have 5 tiles to the next town, but even if we have only 4 (thus the 21 will touch), writing will be high on our research list, I expect (route to catapults, open borders), and a lib will take care of any pressure.

You will not be able to find an empty city in the latest patch - the AIs get a production bonus so their first production unit is there quite fast. Due to the very tight borders the starting unit is always near the capital - so chances for an unprotected city are close to zero.

If you check the attachment again you can see that we WILL be able to settle a second city straight north at the sea. Not a great one, but definitely better than playing OCC.

Sorry - I'm an idiot! I totally forgot to upload the saves as attachments.

Here's the Gandhi save now - it seems the team consensus is to settle in place. I'll play 'in parallel', moving the settler, to see what comes of it.
Go ahead, mrwhite89! :D

I actually played a couple starts with the same conditions (Tiny map, max civs), and I was able to raze a couple unprotected cities within my first 6-8 moves, so it's definitely possible ;) .

This is my official "I got the save"! [party]

Are we using Bhruic's unnoficial patch? We really should, as it addresses some annoying issues from the latest Firaxis patch. Does everybody have this patch? I don't know what the effects would be if one of us doesn't have it. You can find the patch in the BTS forums stickied at the top. PLease let me know guys if this is what we want to do - otherwise I think I need to revert to just the official patch (which would be easy).

wow, you really saw empty cities'? the closest I ever got was seeing them empty, declaring war and presto! there was an archer or two warriors in them!

I did not use the inofficial patch, but having found it I prefer it. Can you please tell us if you can open the save using the patch?

I'm at work for another 7 hours, then taking the Wife to Dinner and a movie, so I won't actually open the save for another 12 hours or so.

But I'll let you know. :)

ok i've played another game with the same circumstance and: On my first border pop, i found three new civs. Because of this, i highly suggest settling in place.
