A visual experiment: Would you like Civ3 to look like this -->

First of all, like almost everyone, I love your idea and preveiw . :goodjob:

How about instead of a power-bar for unit health have some of the unit die. [phaser]

You know like the unit starts with 6 guys then, 4 then, 2 then dead. But resting could heal/recrute more guys.

What do you think would that be possible?

I think you're at least the fifth person to mention that. It can't be done.

Actually....he comes from a British comedy series called "Red Dwarf".

Is that show still being produced? I used to watch it here in Canada, I thought it was really good. I used to get a kick out of the anal-retentive hologram, I forget his name.

It would seem rather odd if a group of spearman set up and tore down camp every square . . .

That wouldn't be necessary if the encampment was only visible in Fortify/Sentry mode.

If it is only fortify mode, then it will work beautifully.

I wish that tool would be released so we can get crackin on this. :D

Steph, the whole civ community owes you a huge debt of gratitude for all the work and effort you have put in to your utility.
This project is more yours than mine (after all....all I did was to make a few previews to see if the idea would work).

Well, it's only been 3 days since I posted that first preview!.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Several people have stressed a wish for some sort of 'encampment' as part of the unit animation.
Now, I am not entirely against the idea....it's just that I am not convinced it would work as hoped.

Remember everyone, the sequence of flcs seems to be the following:-

default-->fidget-->default-->run-->default-->fortify-->attack(s)-->victory or death-->default-->run-->default
(the last run is either into the empty tile, or away if the unit is faster)

Soooo....I have made a very quick and crude unanimated 'encampment' (I'm sure that Civanator could do a much better job, but this will do for now to see if the idea is viable).

I would very much like people to download this and try it for themselves.

Here's what you do
------------------------

1) save your current game.
2) go to the \arts\units folder and pick a unit (the Spearman for example).
3) open the unit folder, then right-click on the SpearmanDefault.flc so that you can rename it (just put an 'X' on the end would do for now. This is so that you can restore it again later).
4) now copy this 'test encampment' into the Spearman folder and change the name to SpearmanDefault.
5) restore your saved game and give it a try. :)
(Note: there is no need to touch the ini configuration file)

Lets us know if it works as you thought it would.........

I don't think it would work to well with the camp being the default. If you could get it so that after the unit has finished moving it then would set up camp not inbetween its movements. if the camp scene is going to work it will need to be thought up clearly before any thing is done.

another thought that i had was that u could make the camp only come up when the unit is fortified. because then we know for sure that the unit is not going to move for a while.
if it is used just for fortify you could also have a unit stand by the fire as a sentry (for early warning of approaching enemy).

How about if people are interested in following the progress in this thread, they read it from the start.
I just did that.

And I must say that this is excellent.

Expecially Steph's program. Excellent work! :goodjob:

Hehe, the Hologram's name is Rimmer.

Red dwarf was great! :D :D :D
So what do your other heads think of this project kryten? ;)

I thought the fortify animation was usually the beginning of the attack animation? For example, the infantry shoulders his rifle, the spearman points his spear (sorry, I dont know the correct wording)

Anyone spoke to the moderators about a multi-unit forum?

Well, when a unit is in the default position (i.e a Spearman with his spear pointing vertically),and wants to get to the attack position (i.e the spear pointing horizontally), then the figure/unit has to go through the fortify.flc.....otherwise the animation would 'jump'.

I'm waiting to hear from Steph before we talk to Thunderfall.

And one of my heads has droid-rot (I think it is this current head. :crazyeye: )

are you sure? The warrior doesnt squat before unleashing his wrath, like he does in fortify.

Cool, This I like. I bet a bomber run would look sweet.

Now that I think harder, and ask my friends, I dont think it plays fortify before the attack. So having the fortify be the camps would be fine. If the unit is fortified when attacked, it will switch to default, then attack, and only play fortify again after battle, if they win.

Well everybody, there is a very easy way of finding out......
