A visual experiment: Would you like Civ3 to look like this -->

Here’s a Marian Legion (from 105BC to 25BC):
The Marian Legion is not perfect yet (notice the awkward turn), but it will be perfected.

Those units look absolutley fantastic kryten.
Keep up the good work.

I'd love to see squadron's of jet fighters flying across the map. It might make people use them more often! Although that is one unit that might have to be scaled down, im not sure.

It looks very nice indeed.
What annoys me (not your fault) is that on the square-divided map like that, it nearly looks like a wargame with real battles (where tactics matter) whereas we still can't.
I wish for an optional Caesar/CtP mix battle field since most battles actually happened outside cities.

So very nice, just makes me think of further dreams

Ive been working on the musketman got the death run and default done.

Another thing Random Observer, you could do with enlarging the frame size so get every bit of the units in. Sometime bits of the head are cut off...and on your default for some reason they appear to poke out of the opposite side of the frame...this would be most irritating in the game.

Ok, I've almost finished to modify Civ3_SBB to automatically generate these formation.

Right now, it handles only 2x3 formation, and I need to iron a bit my formulas to enhance the isometric view.

I still have one small problem : the shadows or the first rank overlap the units behind. I think I can solve the pb, but I need an answer to this question : what are the colors of the palette used for shadows? Are they always the same?

I think I can have a preview done this evening, or perhaps tomorrow.

I will then add a support for several kind of formation, and then we'll be able to mass produce multi men units!

i will add in all the shadows later today i have to redo most of it any way cause flicster screwed up the attack and fortify flcs

You know this really tempts me to learn unit creating, just to be a part in making more of these beautiful things.

And no, don't post in this thread programs, useful advice etc. Ill ask else where.

Keep it up!

To sebsage & Yoda Power....I don't think these 'multi figure units' will have much effect on game speed.
The Civ3 Hoplite run.flc for example is 93 kb in size. Once I have enlarged it from 72 by 62 pixels to 130 by 130 pixels (so that I can get the all the six figures in) it is still only 95 kb in size. :)

To bhiita....I don't think that a Roman Testudo would quite work I'm afraid.
I was thinking along these lines....
....most units would have the 2nd rank sort of 'fidgeting' with their weapon at the ready, and acting as a sort of reserve.
But the following units could have active 2nd ranks:-
Legionaries could carry a single pilum each (in reality they carried two), and the attackA.flc would have both ranks throwing these and then drawing their swords, while attackB.flc has the 1st rank getting stuck in while the 2nd rank 'fidgets' at the ready.
Celtic Swordsmen, Germanic Warriors, and Roman Auxiliaries would have the rear rank continuously throwing javelins overhead.
Skirmishers (Slingers/Javelinmen/Archers/Light Infantry) and Hellenistic Peltasts would have both ranks discharging their missiles at the enemy.
And of course pikes, as you have seen, would have both ranks thrusting.

To Neomega & Scipio Africanu....as I said on the first page of this thread, "4 figure units (in skirmish formation) = all skirmishers and Industrial/Modern foot units, except Victorian/ACW Riflemen".
I was thinking that modern infantry would have two figures down on one knee, and two others standing up at the back. :)
But large figures, such as ships/tanks/chariots/elephants/etc, will have to stay as 'single figure units'.
(Anyway....if you think about it.....a tank is already a 'multi figure unit'. After all, there are 4 or 5 blokes inside it! ;) )
Give me a hour or two and I'll quickly knock-up some static previews.

To Piernik & Willem....yes, I do want every unit in the game to be 'multi figured', where possible (I think that Steph is going to be our saviour here. :D ).
I still have a few 'single figure' units to complete first (like the Companion Horseman and the Javelinman), then I will get stuck into the units required for "Alex the Great"....which is just about EVERY ancient figure we can lay our hands on! :crazyeye:
So I need about 2 or 3 weeks before I can start on the 'multi figure' units.

To Random Observer, Cimbri & Steph....great work everyone! This is going to be a huge project, and I can't possibly do it all myself.
I do have one criticism about Cimbri's previews; the figures are just too small. I think that it's best to use the Civ3 full sized figures for two very good reasons...
First, there is no loss of quality, and they look better.
Second, it's much easier! No need to resize, then fart about trying to get the heads and spears to look right. Just paste the buggers on top of each other! :D
I wonder if I could ask you three to hold off for the moment, as I was thinking of posting a quick tutorial tomorrow on how easy it is to make these units.
It might give you some ideas, or we could maybe swap suggestions. ;)

Cool, I'll be looking forward to them. Excellant idea, great work! Looks like you've created quite a sensation around here. Be sure to point out your stuff to Firaxis.

Indeed Kryten, I’ll hold. True it’s a hell of a mess to work on such small units. But I’m thinking of using this type of units for my scenario – Slash – Modpack. But yours do look better. :goodjob:

I'll look for different combinations to perhaps fit two modern armor or mech infantry into one square. I might resize them lightly so they arn't so big, but I don't want to reduce their visual appearence by distorting their quality. This is really shaping up to be a great project...

SO what units do you plan on converting? The original civ3 and the most-used custom ones, or all? All of then will be a heaping task. There are ALOT of them.

ALl in all, I love the idea, and wish I could help, but my time is at a bare minimum for awhile.

Hmm, im not so sure about that. TO be honest, the only things that i thing should go together in groups are the foot units and to a lesser extent fighters. Okay, i knw the scale is hidiously wrong in all units, but we know this is so the units can be easily represented in the game, you cant have true scale of a marine to the size of the aircraft carrier, the marine would barely be the size of a single pixel. But the scale is already off with the tanks and the foot units, if you shrink them even more its gonna be so weird. And as was previously posted the are in sense a unit of their own. Dont get me wrong, i just think that you can only do these with foot units, and i would love to play with these in my game, as soon as they are done i am downloading those flcs straight away. Give it a go, i would like to see a preview. You never know, it may prove me wrong...it may be an excelent idea.
