Aabra02: Hammy Builds a House

I'll take my place after Whomp if that's OK.

That's fine, Tone! We didn't give you much notice, did we? :p

Roster Update:

Whomp - up
Tone - on deck
Beorn-eL-Feared -
scoutsout -
gmaharriet -
Bede - just played
Aabraxan - indefinite lurker status

Cancel our deal with China for our dyes and gems for his 9gpt and spices.
Restructure our lux needs with Joanie giving silks for dyes, 18gpt and 11g.
Decide to turn up the heat on medicine. No one has it and we'll have a good shot at a possible monopoly on sanitation at the worst by running hot. MM the economy for research and medicine due in 8 with a 151gpt deficit. Sell off a few rax that will never produce a unit other than a siege weapon

1330 Prep for the Arabs elimination.
1340 Arabs next turn.
1345 Trade Music theory for 71g to Abu and declare war on him.
arabwarqb9.jpg

We'll be getting a nice bump in income next turn with 82gpt coming home from a deal with Joanie. We also will have to negotiate peace with the Ports again. They're no factor and have a 1 tile island so we may want to keep them around for UN.

IT Hehe...two Arab spears and a LB run out of their remaining city towards our city Fez. I don't think they'll make it. Damascus goes into disarray.
1350 Our cannons rip into both spears and we lose 1hp on our army and we get an elite win to waste the Arabs.
arabwar2vw8.jpg

IT Extend our peace deal with Henry for no gpt this time.

1355 Pick up a World Map, Mil Trad and Ivory from the Mayans for dyes and Theory of Gravity. This allows me to reduce lux to 10% and crank research up to 90% and we'll get medicine next turn. We may get that monopoly after all.

1360 We have a monopoly. Time to trade. We can pick up nationalism from Joan straight up. The others won't deal that way. We can get 108 gpt from the Chinese. Start with Joan with nationalism for medicine. She is the only one with facsism.
At 10% lux we're running 345gpt. We can run at 397gpt with another lux.
So it's either spices 7gpt and 3g for medicine or 40gpt and 9g.
Make the spices deal and get gpt to 407gpt. Crank up science again on sanitation and it's coming in around 5 turns with some deficit research again.

1365Build, build, build.
IT Maya and England make peace.
1370 Build, build, build.
1375 Try to get sanitation in 1 but it's not possible. Turn down research to 70%

Summary
Primarily builder turns for me. I think we'll get sanitation as a monopoly too. Things are looking good as we have ~33% of land and population.

First the Celts, now the Arabs are booted off our little planet. Sweet. Who's next?

I won't recognize this game when it comes back around to me...even if the next few are "builder" sets.

Well the logical next would be either to get the Ports to declare on us (they're in our territory) or the French. We have deals with everyone else.

Right now our units are ready to go and we built quite a few galleons this set.

Nice going, Whomp! You got rid of an enemy and got us techs, luxes and gold to spend. Can't ask for more than that. :D

:D this is great.

So I guess I'll get to tinker with worker moves and scientist optimization ... been a while, looking forward to it.

Take your time, Tone, I won't have much time before this coming Friday anyways.

Sounds good. I haven't looked yet but consider this a 'got it'.

I'll take a look eithet tonight or tomorrow, post some questions, wait for you guys to reply and play on Thursday. If that schedule is not OK let me know but with BEF not being able to play until Friday I imagine that it will be fine.

Are we going for the Diplo-No-UN-Build win btw?

This is developing nicely towards World Domination. There is something satisfying about a domination win and never training a settler :)

I don't think you ever got a direct reply on this, and I hate to see you left hanging.

When it was first suggested, I asked a question and Bede made a suggestion, and everybody else said nothing. I don't know if that's a "not interested", a "no opposition to it" or an "I dunno" indicator.

I guess I'd generally work toward going for it unless you come across events that sound better. IOW, see how it feels to you in-game to go that direction and go with your instincts.

Now, how's that for a firm "I dunno" answer? :p

The rest of the team can chime in if they have any strong feelings about it. :D

Well, I'm not on the team, but I'll sacrifice a virgin  to the volcano gods to see it happen...

...World Domination...something satisfying...domination win and never training a settler :)
 Yeah - what he said. Global domination from a one-built-city variant. Let's rock-n-roll... 'n stuff. :hammer:

I think it's a foregone conclusion we can win with a one settler domination. Question is can we wait for the AI to build UN? If they do we'll win unless we're not allowed bribes and actually play peaceful at the end of the IA's. :mischief:

I'd be very pleased with us if we pulled a domination win and a captured-UN victory on the same turn.

OK, so World Domination but don't upset anyone just in case we go for UN.

I finally got to look at the save. I haven't started civ since last Saturday would you believe? What a week!!!! I could play now but I just want to post a few thoughts to guage feelings. I have Saturday free so I can finish within 24 hours. (and I may also finish my milk game for the HOF now that I'm in the stapled-return-key phase.)

I don't fancy an active war with Portugal as they have a couple of poor southern islands that might take to man troops to protect plus a one tile island that we can only get through peace. I can try to get them to declare if you fancy the War Fever but they are polite so I doubt that it will happen unless I wind them up a lot first.

I fancy one of the mainland civs but trades could be a problem in this respect. In particular I find China a very attractive target but we are getting spices for another 17 turns so how about France first? We have no trades with them and wouldn't have to break a PT. We could try and get China as our allies and by the time we get there they will have slugged it out enough for us to steamroller both maybe? (However probably not in my turns as our ships are not best placed for this target)

Views?

France is the natural target indeed, the only one with whom we have no treaty. I was not sure about allying China in, but since we do need them to build the UN we shouldn't try and play them down, so as I'mn writing this I'm more and more in favor of it.

What do we want to do with ToE? I don't think we can afford to wait a long while with it in our hands, China being so close and all, but at this point we can still consider ourselves possessing it. It's ~25 turns in Babylon, ~30 in Mecca, so a pre-build should be though of soon. I guess it'll have to be used for expensive techs like steel or electronics to give us a trading edge again.

I've just started playing. As we get Sanitation, this happens:

Spoiler :
Bad_news_guys.jpg

It's in Canton which is a bit of a powerhouse by the looks of things.

I think that we continue as normal but, as I had already decided, we wait until our trades expire and pounce on China as soon as we are able.

Should we do a palace pre-build immediately and try to steal the tech with a diplomat?

Hi BEF! Good to see that you're out there.

The Palace prebuild is fine but I shall complete the Hospital in Babylon first. we can get over 30 spt there so we can beat anyone else. I don't think that stealing the tech will help much. We cannot get ToE any faster than it will take us to research the pair of techs anyway as we are limited by our build speed rather than our tech pace.

I think that it's worth a city investigation to see how long we have though. The current cost is 166gp. If the build will take longer than our trade will last, then we can attack Canton as our first target. Maybe I should stop and see what the group feels?

Oh my that's quite a dilemma. I wonder if we try to steal anyhow. Maybe we'll be unsuccessful and the Chinese will break our deal and declare on us. Then we can focus on Canton with some help from their neighbors.

Maybe we'll be unsuccessful and the Chinese will break our deal and declare on us.
That's a strange one as far as rep goes. I remember investigating this a quite a while back but I can't remember my conclusion with 100% certainty!!! IIRC if the Chinese declare on us due to an unsuccessful steal we don't take a rep hit for the broken deal but our people don't give us war happiness either. If that is correct then I'd take it, but I don't want to find that I've ruined our rep. Can someone confirm that our rep will be fine? If not I'll search for my post.

I'll stop here and post the save as I think this needs discussion. I've had the save quite a while so maybe BEF should take over anyway.

If we are going to steal the tech we'll need another 1000gp. This means that we cannot do it straight away but we can get our troops in place just in case they declare. Maybe that city investigation will be worth the investment. It is much cheaper and will let us know how much time we have to work with.

Spoiler turn set so far :
1375(0)

A few checks first. Tech level is very economically set with almost no waste. We have a few flip risks but nothing that we can really deal with.

My aims: I talked about going for France before but I really fancy China as the next target as getting to France will just take too long and there are more Chinese cities on our continent. I'm going to build instead and play a quiet turnset. We are close to getting Medicine so I think that the cav build in Mecca can become a Hospital pre-build. We can think about ToE a bit later I feel.

1380 (1) Railing strategic network continues.
IBT: Sanitation>Electricity. Babylon and Mecca switch to hospitals. Chinese start ToE!!!!!!

Rest of the five turns just involve building and railing. Nothing else to report.
