So I was playing a Huge map as Songhai. I made a mad dash for 5 cities, using barbs to buy 3 settlers. Was going a long fine, no freinds, one open border to Cathy. I normally do not let AI's have OB's. No idea why I let her, anyways about 140 AD, Cathy starts setting troops by my capitol, I am like hmmmmm. I place 6 horseman near capitol, just in case!! Sure enough, she declared war in my lands!!

My question is, how can she declare war with all those troops in my ZOC!! This is a clear abuse!! I am pretty sure, in previous CIV versions, it moved all your troops on War Dec right?

If you had ever played Civ3, you would not have asked that. Just look up the term "ROP rape".

I'd have to parse the xml files to name them, but a few civs are inclined toward DoWing you while their troops are in your territory via OB. Most will either pull their troops back just beyond your border or wait until OB expires. The human player takes a diplo hit for abusing OB. I'm not certain that the AI takes the same hit or any at all for doing it.

You know, I guess I do remember bad borders from 3. I guess I have good ole IV syndrome!! Anyways, leson learned. Do not trust any AI for any reason.

Uh, wait... Are you saying that you can pre-position all your troops inside a civs borders for a perfect first turn assault, declare war, and they don't get booted out?

If so, I know how I am dealing with AIs with the Great Wall from now on. Diplo hits be damned.

I recently had Germany do that to me three times, after the second I learned that was his MO. He would send his troops down ask for open boarders and than declare war within the next two turns. Its a lot easier from say Civ 2 when any troop was passed the half way point between the two empires they would automatically be sent back to their cities but that game one had to think about reputation, Civ 5, unless you are really trying to work on peace, most of the empires already are going to hate you anyways. That game I had to plot a city passed Germany just so I can nab the 6 iron, the two I had wasn't cutting it for sieging Berlin. That made Russia mad since it was in her A.O.

Of course, after the third declaration of war on me from Germany, I went and killed him off, again making everyone denounce me for a war I didn't start. I agree with the attack them without regards to reputation in Civ 5.

Didn't know they could do that. Maybe it was introduced with the patch. It's not happened to me yet - but they might've introduced it to stop players OB spamming for gold. Clearly I'm going to have to rethink how willingly I sign my OB's from now on in.

This sounds just wrong, an OB-deal is just that, open borders for letting ppl coming and having a look at your pretty country.

If they're inside your borders and declare war, then the deal is broken and they should be teleported to the outside of your borders. Only then their attack can begin.

If this has changed after the new patch, then something is seriosly wrong. I haven't even seen it myself, I usually stay away from OB on harder levels.

Can anyone confirm this? I seems funny they work so hard to take away ICS, only to introduce ROP-rape again?

I don't remember if Germany was inside my boarders but since my nation was spread out Open borders are pointless so I let them have it, seeing wave of troops nearing them, I can see if I can go back and watch if they entered before declaring war.

Tested this last night, declaring war on someone I had open borders with did get my troops tossed out.

In the vanilla game without G&K, my troops don't get tossed out when I declare war on a city-state that lets me in.

The diplomacy hit is huge, though. I did it two times to city states and right after I took over the second city state that way every last civilization and every last city state went permanent war with me.

Diplo hit is for killing city state, not for abusing open borders.
