Normally it should work as long as you don't already have more than 3 IDE devices in it.
But I can't guarantee it. I have a friend who wanted to use an 40 gig HDD but his BIOS didn't support it :/
That site doesn'T show any BIOS specs...
But any board that was made no later than January 99 and has an up to date BIOS should be able to handle it.

Well....It shouldn't be a problem if:
1) The computer is newer then 2 or 3 years old then it will already have EIDE and LBA support.
2) There are no more than 3 HDD's or CD-ROM set up already (The limit is 4)

I'll keep fishing around the sites and see if I can find more info on the MB.

I do believe that Win98 or maybe it's FAT32 has trouble over 32 GB....so you may need to partition it.

After looking at the specs......I don't think you can do it. :(

There is no meantion of EIDE or LBA. And in the Q & A they were talking about detection errors with an IBM 8.3 GB drive (The IDE limit is 8.2 GB)

There are ways around that however. You can scower the net for the newest BIOS version, it may allow EIDE and LBA, or you can get a hard drive controller card that supports it (Although I'm not sure how this will work with other devices), or you can get "Drive Overlay" software. Which is basically a program that tells the BIOS what size the hard drive is in terms it can understand, and of course your last option is upgrading the Motherboard......

Well.....hope that helps.

well you don't have to worry abuot fat 32.. ughh.. *cough* it's max partion size is .. uh.. 2 TB...

i was reading your motherboard manual

and yes your bios supports LBA 8.4 GB but it says nothing abuot INT 13 so i'm asumeing that it doesn't have INT 13 support

go download a updated bios (it's there on the asus's site) and flash the bios.. the instructions on how to flash the bios are actually there in your manual... there's a jumper for it (so you don't need those fancy tools to do it) and everything's there so it won't be a problem just make sure you do it right or you'll skrew everything up :_)

or partion in 8 gig blocks but what fun is that?

the board does have LBA and is IDE

I do have (but not installed) the latest BIOS (download as starting this thread)

so if understand all the above correctly then I should (75-80% chance) get it working

thanks guys :goodjob:
now I just need to get into the city to get it :D

my parents don't need a 40 gig hd I do but I want to put it in my parents computer (Its cheaper than a new comp)
why do I need 40 gig because my parents 3 gig has only ~900 mb left and I want to install linux a ~ 2gig distrubution plus theres all my civ2 scenerios downloaded of the net:D then theres my website and c++ and qbasic programming:goodjob:

and its also cheapst per Gb

hopefuly my mum can get into town and get it in the next couple of days :D

I have it in the case all connected up to the power and IDE cables plugged in though I did have some problems the people who installed the cd drive configured it as slave on the secondry when there was no master  on the sec con once I figured that out the comp stop hanging when booting and would actually go into windows with out being in safe mode
currently now down loading software to support it or some thing

I just recently installed a 60gb hdd and i ran into the exact same problem at first! The main drawback of a huge hdd is that it slows down your system somewhat.

I found just the opisite to be true. When I got my 40 Gig (or 38.1Gig, depends on how you look at it) drive my system took about 15 seconds less time to boot. I attribute this to the fact that the old drive is 5400 RPM and my new drive is 7200 RPM.

yip it goes and works (I am and have been using it)
thanks for help guys

any questions/comments on how I got i working leave them in this thread
