Hey all, I hope you all are doing well. Civ IV is kinda winding down on the excitement area, so I started looking at unit graphics, mod components, graphic modpacks, and things of the sort. I have been asking for months now on how to add a unit to Civ IV, but so far I have had no luck. To all the moderators reading this, I did put this in the tech support area a few months ago. ;) I've read Rabbit White's 'Adding new units in 6 easy steps', and Sovarn's guide as well. I am still confused on it though. Can any1 please tell me what to do to add something like this..

or this...

I am really having a hard time with this, so any help would be appreciated.
I am running Civ IV Vanilla.

Thanks all!!:hatsoff:

Thanks, I'm posting anywhere where I might find an answer. I just posted there though. So hopefully I'll get an answer.

Forgive me - I don't have any of the file names in front of me... I'm writing from memory - but there's three main files that you have to edit. (I don't know if this needs to be said, but always copy them to the "custom assets" folder and edit them there.)

There's two files under the XML\units folder - one is called something like "unitinfos" and the other is "unitclassinfos" I think... anyway, you would need to add your new unit to both of these files in the same pattern that the other units are there. There's another file in the XML\art ?? (again, not sure on the name) that is called something like "unitart" or "artunitinfo" or something... it's an art file that has the word "unit" in the name somewhere. You need to add your new unit here as well.

It's not required to make it work, but you'll probably want to add a text files as well, so that the name shows up correctly in game and so that you have pedia and strategy enteries for it that arn't cryptic. This is pretty simple - you can create your own text file with just your custom stuff in it and it will mesh with the rest of the game. Again, place it in the "custom assets" folder and pattern it after the other XML\text files.

I've never added custom unit art, but the art file that I discussed earlier will point to the unit art that you're wanting to add, so as long as you get the path correct, I think it should work fine. Unless you're going to be adding new promotions or unit catagories, that's really all you have to do.

Sometimes it's easier to copy what others do instead of doing it from scratch yourself.

If you're having problems understanding how to add a unit from scratch, then you might consider downloading an existing mod and copying what they did in theirs.

I've added both units you are talking about in my own mod (Ironclad Cruiser and Russian Pre-Dreadnought respectively).

Maybe try downloading this:

then see if you can copy how it was done.
