Must I add ANIMENAME_ to the pediaicons.txt in the order of the units I added to the bx file in the editor. For example I added British Longbowman.......Trebuchet. Must I write British Longbowman.....Trebuchet? Second question where should I add new units in the PTW folder or CIV3 folder?

Yes, you must add an #ANIMNAME_PRTO_Unit entry to the pediaicons.txt for every unit you add.

EDIT: sorry, I didn't read your question more carefully. I don't believe the order makes a difference. Try it and see - if it doesn't work just change it.

If you are using the PTW editor, you should add the units to the PTW art folder.

Sparrowhawk is right - the order doesn't matter. :)

And about adding units, don't modify the BIX in the CIV3PTW folder!.

Instead, make a copy of the Civ3X.BIX and put it in the CIV3PTW\Scenarios folder - then rename that Jerikos Mod (or whatever) and make all changes to that BIX file instead.

Then, when you want to add the units, you create a new Folder in the Scenarios folder and give that the same name as the new BIX file ("Jerikos Mod"), then create an Art folder within that and a Units folder, following the same structure as the general Civ3 folder structure, and just place your unit artwork in there.

I.e. you'll end up having the Trebuchet artwork in a folder with this path:

"..\Civilization III\CIV3PTW\Scenarios\Jerikos Mod\Art\Units\Trebuchet"

Adding them to the general CIV3PTW directories, won't necessarily produce errors, but it might, because you will then be overwriting default files - by placing them in a separate folder, it will be easy as heck to back up your files and to upload your mod to this place, for example :)

Oh, and if you want to play your mod (I assume you do :) ), just select Load Scenario, and it should be somewhere on the list.

I thought PTW was supposed to make modding easier. But instead we have another text file entry to make before we can play a modded scenerio. What a load of crapola.

It sure as heck beats renaming folders and .INI files :)

Anyway, it was supposed to make life easier for mod players, I think, not necessarily for the modders - I doubt we'll ever be able to make mods for any game, simply by pressing a few buttons. Customizability and Ease of Use are two terms that seem to be mutually exclusive.

I have no complaints about adding units. I just started modding since I got PTW, and I've found it easy to understand (thx to Kryten) and simple to do. Even playing with the .ini files isn't hard to figure out.

Wait wait, we don't have to rename stuff anymore? I know how to add units and all that, been doing it for a long time, but how does the pedia icons.txt stuff relate to the new units you add? I thought it was just a book keeping function.

pedialicons.txt tells the program what to look for (art, etc). If you don't have an entry there, the program wouldn't have any idea where to look.

I just make a copy of the PTW pedialicons.txt file (so you have all the info for the regular Civ3 and PTW civs and units) and place the copy in the scenario folder for my mod, then make changes from there.

If you merely rename a unit (making sure you've made a unit folder and .ini with that name) do you still have to add an entry to the ANIMNAME file?

EDIT: I tried it out, and you DON'T need to add a new animname entry when merely renaming units. (I wanted to rename "Medieval Infantry" to "Man-at-Arms").

Col.Kraken: I'm not home to check right now, but I think you don't need to if the Civilopedia Entry value for the two units stays the same.
But then they'll be using the same artwork and civilopedia entries too, of course.

So if you download a unit called infantry, and want to use the artwork for a unit called American Infantry and a unit called Russian Infantry, you create the two units in the BIX and then give them both the same value in the Civilopedia Entry box - for example, PRTO_Infantry

Next, put the Infantry folder in the Art\Units folder.

Then in Pediaicons.txt, add the following lines

#ANIMNAME_PRTO_Infantry
Infantry

That way you don't even have to make two separate folders for the units - just one 'Infantry' folder will do.

Or you could wait until I release my er thing that will do this stuff for you.

Release date, as soon as 1.05f is released as that is what I've built it on.

I got a problem...

I was OK when adding the PTW extra units to a scenario .bix and creating the pedia.txt for them in a file. It worked fine.

Then I added some custom units (Air Transport, Attack Chopper etc.) and now when I try to load the scenario, I get this message:

FILE NOT FOUND
"#"

game will now exit

Any thoughts?

So what you all are saying is when you add a unit(s) you must have the ANIMNAME and an extra folder with all the unit(s) in it?
and the folder must be the name of the Bix?

Also if you add in Civilizations do you also need to and the ANIMNAME for them to?

How do you make a utility for the game if the Patch hasn't come out yet? (or am I behind times?)

I got the 1.04f, but I did not know about a 1.05f.
Is there any were that I can get up to the day updates of PtW?

That's all true. If you want though, you can make separate civilopedia entries (PRTO_American_Infantry) and then just add the lines:
#ANIMNAME_PRTO_American_Infantry
Infantry

Then you can write a separate civpedia entry if you want to and still not have duplicate folders or .ini files. Only if you do want to have separate civpedia entries for the new units.

Yep - you can do that too :)

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. I added the Incas and the unique unit of the Eagle Warrior. I can't get the Eagle Warrior to work properly. Each time I try to build it, I get a "Missing Entry" error that refers to the PediaIcons file. I have already inserted #ANIMNAME_PRTO_Eagle_Warrior and then Eagle Warrior on the next line. I have checked the spelling and spacing to make sure there are no errors. I have directed the scenario path in the editor to my specific scenario folder and added the Eagle Warrior to the art/units subfolder. I know that the scenario path is working properly because the editor gives me the choice of the additional icons from the modified units32 file and the Eagle Warrior icon shows up in the build queue. What can I be missing?
