I'm guessing this is one of those features from CIV4 that we'll be losing and I'm ok with that. I hope it makes a return in an expansion pack though.

Did anyone else enjoy the advanced start option? It was great for starting in a later era or getting through the tedium of the first few turns of the ancient era. Pretty easy to abuse, but I play single player exclusively so pfffft! :p

I'm pretty sure the latest Polycast discussed this very issue, and unless my memory is completely broken, Civ 5 will indeed have advanced starts.

Did you read something that makes you think it won't be in the game?

No, it just seemed like the kind of advanced feature that would be cut. Though come to think of it, it's probably pretty useful for setting up test cases. That's great to hear that it returns (I haven't listened to the pod cast).

I kind of liked it earlier, but now that I know the game better and play on higher difficulties I find the first turns far to interesting and important to skip.

I think I'm going to eventually try a game with a future tech start just to hopefully see Barbarians with GDR's and Nukes :)

Yes, in the latest podcast it was said that an advanced start is possible.

The main feature I hope they fix is the late game...the early game was always interesting but by the end of the middle ages I always felt the game was over.

I would like an in game editor to create things like Rhye's rise and fall. Give the computer X points to do what they will in 1600 etc..

In real life we have seen rapid empire growth from a stagnant empire, but that is near impossible for the AI to pull off I find. A feature like this might address that problem.

I haven't seen Advanced Start in any of the screens.

Advanced Start is one of those features that sounds awesome, but which I never use. I think I used it once when it was first introduced to try out the Dutch or Portuguese (to get right to the UU), and never used it again (outside of scenarios that require it). The initial placement of cities in the early game is one of the most fun and most important parts of the game.

This. It's in the game.

One of the two Firaxis guys (I couldn't always tell Jon and Dennis's voices apart) definitely confirmed that you'd be able to start in "any age." Now, we don't know if this includes the ability to buy starting buildings, improvements, techs, and units for "points" the way you could in Civ 4, or if it just means you start with a settler and a military unit with all the techs researched, or if you start with some generic infrastructure.
