Recently I have been introduced to an ancient (1993) PBEM called Adventurer Kings and I am totally hooked! :king:

It's a hex based strategy game where you conquer a fantasy world. Lots of diplomacy with 10-20 human players and some rpg elements as well.

We send in our orders in every week by email and get the results a few days later. You cannot imagine the feeling when you just received your turn report and find out how your battles turned out. :crazyeye: Just like Christmas morning!

There still is a small player base around and they recently put up this site to attract new (and old) players:

Have a look at the manual, I think it will appeal to many CIV players.

any modern day remakes or similar games that are not from the era of floppy games?

There is a similar game (not so much RPG, but definitely strategy) called Metal Knights. It's loosely similar to civ2. Made in 1998. free download here at google

Not that I know of... but then I am fairly new to the PBEM genre.

I have to admit most AK players I know were already gaming back in the floppy era. Maybe that makes it easier for us to see through the 90's style user interface.
