Adventurer Kings

Recently I have been introduced to an ancient (1993) PBEM called Adventurer Kings and I am totally hooked!

It's a hex based strategy game where you conquer a fantasy world. Lots of diplomacy with 10-20 human players and some rpg elements as well.

We send in our orders in every week by email and get the results a few days later. You cannot imagine the feeling when you just received your turn report and find out how your battles turned out. Just like Christmas morning!

There still is a small player base around and they recently put up this site to attract new (and old) players:

Have a look at the manual, I think it will appeal to many CIV players.

any modern day remakes or similar games that are not from the era of floppy games?

There is a similar game (not so much RPG, but definitely strategy) called Metal Knights. It's loosely similar to civ2. Made in 1998. free download here at google

any modern day remakes or similar games that are not from the era of floppy games?

Not that I know of... but then I am fairly new to the PBEM genre.

I have to admit most AK players I know were already gaming back in the floppy era. Maybe that makes it easier for us to see through the 90's style user interface.
