I also wanted to force some kind of conflict since a peaceful Space Race game could get quite boring, which was the purpose of the barb islands as you suggested.

I think the MGs were the right units to start, I also think the size of this map is right in regards transport speed. I do not think anyone thinks they will be overlooked in regards to being assaulted therefore blindly not taking precautions elevates this above boring ship building.

There are a lot of choices in the where and when of city building etc
