AI Cheating?

On top of a mountain, I have placed a Canon, a Musketeer, and a Catapult. They are all in "Fortified" position. Along comes 1 enemy Calvary and destroys all three units.

Another location has a level 8 city being attacked by two Conscripts. No matter what I send against them they are unbeatable - as if they have super powers and my crew is just tissue paper.

Is the AI cheating?

Probably just unlucky. Since combat is all-or-nothing, if the AI has an attack factor 1 and your combined modified defense is 100, there is a 1/101 chance of the AI winning.

In the situation where you initiate the attack, if you can save the game just before then attack, reload, attack, reload, attack: If the AI wins every time, then it's obviously cheating.

Frankly, on emperor difficulty, no matter on what government you are, AI kicked my asses million of times with legion or cavalry. I remembered like it was yesterday when one enemy (even barbarian) unit repeatedly destroys my several mech. infs inside a city with city walls...That's normal for higher difficulties :P Like they get 500% attack/defense bonus vs player.

The worst is losing veteran Battleship against wandering militia! I seen that countless times.

These randoms are so weird and unrealistic than I sometimes accept luck manipulation to.
But not too much.
I once conquered huge continent full of well defended city’s with single armor at one turn (together with reload ‘bug’)!
Since then I newer move military units under reload ‘bug’ only Caravans and Settlers (except few very, very bad survival critical moments ;))

There in no such a thing than "combined modified defense" in Civ1. Every unit defend one by one. The others only die together with unfortunate defender (if there no fort or city).

Civ1 apparently does not save random seed, but sometimes You just need to break the series of bad luck with doing someting else, enter a hut or whatever that consumes a random number, attack elsewhere, even that helps.

By "combined" I meant "all modifiers applied", for example, veteran+mountains+fortress. I, also, wasn't suggesting the defense factor could actually reach 100, just that the attack always has a non-zero chance of winning.

same thing happened to me, i had five knights fortified in a city and one legion came and killed them all

I once had a phalanx unit defend against 7 battleships.
Let's say you have a defense of 2 for phalanx, times 5 for a mountain + fortress and times 150% for veteran.
So that's 15.
Battleships have 18 attack.
