Has anyone noticed how happily the AI throw away DoFs? They seem to mean nothing to them and friends are constantly attacking my city states, demanding tribute from them, and stealing technologies from me even when I have told them not to do so again. Has anyone noticed how the AI seemingly disregard declarations of friendship when it comes to stuff like this or is it just me?

Happens over here too. Also AIs will offer and accept DOFs even if you DOFed with their enemy. So it's not just a joke when they said that the AI is more "forgiving". :D

Your confusing DOF with actual friendship, probably a guy thing. Think of it from another perspective.

Girl: Oh i love your hair and that dress is soo cute lets be BFF see you tomorrow kisses.

Girl round corner: Did you see what she was wearing er gross and her hair yuck im never speaking to her.

DOF's are a means to loot your allies and position an army on your border while convincing you its on its way to attack atila.
The only friend you have in game is the one on his knees begging for peace while you plan which units it going to take their last city. :borg:

Moral of the story - thank God I am not a woman.:shake:

I was in an amazing friendship triangle with Siam and Spain that wouldn't have been possible in Vanilla (in Vanilla, Siam would run over us both with elephants in the mid-game). So one time the Mongols decided to pick on Spain, who was the weakest of us three. I immediately denounced the Khan, and very soon, Siam joined in, my faraway friend Rome joined in, the Netherlands added in their weight...

I did the same thing to my extremely unfriendly neighbor Sejong (neutral, covets your lands), and the next thing I know Siam and Spain were agreeing that "Koreans are clearly not to be trusted"

And that's why you have Denounce.

Cuz the AI are all honey badgers, and honey badgers don't care 'bout DoFs.

They actually do.

Siam was spamming cities around Spain, the kind that says "I WANT YOUR LANDS BADLY". yet amazingly enough, both of them were friends for literal ages.

I am in agreement. Catherine has spoken. (Hides)

Вы ошибаетесь мою страсть к слабости, вы пожалеете об этом.

You've mistaken my passion for a weakness, you'll regret it..

Honey Badgers denounce one another?

And yep AI are much more willing to denounce your enemies too. I actually denounce people more often now.

In G&K, I managed to build up a far more meaningful friendship with one Civ (Spain) than I would ever have been able to do in vanilla. We signed a DoF early on for RA purposes, and then she declared on me the minute it was up (cheers, Izzy) but that ended very early and with no ill effects, and after I DoFed China, who she also liked, and went to war with Cathy and Liz, we were bestest best buddies. I spread my religion to all her cities, which also helps. Now she's regularly coming to me as soon as the DoF is up asking to renew it. It's great.

Cathy still denounced me after she DoWed me, and the only reason she had was coveting my lands, so yeah, the AI still abuses denouncements.

I found long term friends much more amenable to declare war on people who decided that I had built too much wonder and too few military units for my own good. That is, except when they don't have an actual army and are therefore unable to wage war.

Friends do care about DOFs in that they will not backstab you and ignore your foibles. On multiple occasions refusing to continue a DOF immediatley brought about a slide to war. I do agree that DOF civs should be less willing to mess with their friends city states. On the other hand the new bullying mechanics mean that city-states get killed less. BUlly my city-states they still give me the same benefit. Just don't pledge to protect city-states near anti city state allies such as Songhai, Carthage etc.

Or pledge to protect them, if you want a reason to expand aggressively in the other nation's lands :)

The key to form friendships is trading if you want to ally with russia (catherine) trade her luxuries for some ogld.
