am in middle of "vanilla" (not PTW) civ 3 at Emperor level, playing as Chinese .... thought some of you might find this amusing .... for set-up preferences at beginning of game I de-selected the "culturally linked" starting position option ... so, guess who I got as neighbors (playing large Pangea map) ...

to the West ----------- Persia
NorthWest ---- Russia
NorthEast ----- Zulus
East ------------ Aztecs
SouthEast----- Germans

think maybe I'm favoring a militaristic strategy - LOL! ... hell, the damned Iroquois were to the South, and they allied with the Zulus at one point when the best they had were bowmen to match my cavalry and musketmen - and that gotten from the tech "gift" I had made to them earlier hoping they wouldn't give me any trouble while I dealt with the other idiots ...

anyway, I didn't give Xerxes time to do his thing, so I dispatched him early to the island of "Elba" with one city - and the moron still later declared war on me with Russia and he "attacked" via seaborne "invasion" and went against my Cavalry and Riflemen with a Spearman and an Archer :crazyeye:

but all is not lost - much further away are the Indians, English and American, all of whom I trade with extensively ... as for the rest, well let's just say they are bent on reducing their population ... right now the Aztecs are "invading" me with Knights and Pikemen to go against my Infantry, Artillery, and Cavalry ...
there's only a narrow corridor of territory to advance thru, and they only send a few units at a time, so the Arty chews up their Knights, my Cav then attacks and kills them, then run back to cities to heal ... and the nitwits just keep coming ... finally I got the Germans to join in an alliance with me against the Aztecs (their border is longer w/them than mine, so hopefully they will distract those idiots), meanwhile I need to go back again and deal with the moronic Russians and Zulus because though I sign peace treatries with one, the other attacks, and then because they have an MPP the other abrogates the treaty - so here we go again ... I'm taking a defensive posture for now, letting them waste away their military power on fruitless attacks while I invest more in factories and other infrastrucutre - then there will come a reckoning as soon as I get tanks!

nothing like having aggressive militaristic civs on your border to help you choose your strategy, eh ...

the Glorious Horde of the Great Khan will soon descend upon these impudent fools and destroy them! :D

Sounds like you were playing as Poland to me!!!

:tank::soldier::eek::soldier::tank:

Sounds like you were playing on Chieftan to me!

no, am playing at Emperor level ...

started out war-mongering from the beginning (what choice was there) ... the Persians were more than happy to give me multiple techs each time I made peace with them ... was able to get the Great Library due to getting a Leader from combat .... and then managed to beat the other AIs to Darwin and got 2 techs ahead, and then sold them for a ton of gold, so yeah, warring has paid off .... it would be nice to have a few turns to consolidate and solidify my infrastructure, though ... seems like every other turn one of these idiots wants to start a war, so I merely oblige them :D

I have found Persia to be only moderately aggressive. However, they are aggressive fairly early because of their immortals. Later in the game they tend to be more reasonable.

Catherine, however, seems to make more outrageous demands than any other leader!
