So I've played almost twenty plus games of CIV VI on King, Diety and more and have yet to see an AI use any form of nuclear weapons. Most definitely not on me and at least I have not seen on the AI ... what about the CFC !?! Post pictures

Yes, I played a Deity session and India nuked me after I nuked them first. It surprised me, but thankfully it was one of my cities in the back and not the one that all my units were around (maybe because it was too close to his own city?); it would have been a total disaster if I lost all those units.

Not sure if AIs are up to first-striking someone.

Thank you for the response!!! Question ? Was the the weapon just an atomic bomb or a more powerful thermal nuclear device ? How was it sent sub, bomber, or missle improvement?

To be honest I don't know how it was sent. I think it was an atomic bomb because the amount of radiation didn't seem overly devastating, but I'm not 100% sure. He had already reached the very end of the tech tree long ago (the whole reason why I nuked him was to disrupt his impending spaceship completion) so he certainly had the capability for thermonuclear devices. Also I should add that he nuked me twice.

Was it the same city twice ? Same city land mass or second city ?

I'm thinking the AI will only use nukes if it gets nuked first. I've owned nukes and never used them many times, and the AI has never attacked me with nukes.

I am not sure, if this is really one of the (many) flaws. It could also be an intentional behavior in order to prevent player frustration. Wasn't it so in Civ5, too?

If such a limitation is necessary and appreciated, is debatable of course.

It should just play with difficulty level then and if the case why not make anti ICBM units of some sort like THAAD

I have seen the AI use nuke in a Let's Play and also I have walked into an area that was contaminated once. The poor civ was at war with a lot of civs, including me, so I don't know who nuked him (Gandhi was in that game though).

In one game I've been nuked back twice, AI used simple A-bombs to retaliate and picked different cities.
And in my recent immortal game I witnessed this:

Kongo used a thermonuke (!) on Kabul. AI Australia is suzerain of Kabul and at war with AI Kongo. You can also see my poor trader advancing mindlessly to meet his terrible end in the fallout.
(Here I was considering declaring war on Kabul and just walk in, but then decided not to. Staying buddies with Scythia was worth more :) )

I'm pretty sure I saw Soren Johnson in a video mentioning that AI was limited re nuclear weapons in IV. Which would annoy me if true.
Then I accept the incentives around using nukes in a "competitive environment" (aka a game), without every game having a similar late game, would be tricky.

Rather than create an additional thread, a related question.
I have got a +6 diplomacy from a nuke lover for setting off a bomb but I have not seen any negative diplomacy values for using a nuke. Has anyone seen any?

I recently finished a game where I set my own custom victory conditions. The final condition was that I nuke every AI capital on the same turn. Once I was ready to do that I started the final turn at peace with everybody (for the most part they all liked me). I declared war on one Civ and nuked their capital. I then proceeded to nuke every other capital. After I was finished I realized that I never declared war on the rest of the Civ's so I double checked and sure enough I was still at peace with them. I checked the diplomacy screen and every Civ with the exception of one still liked me. I ended the turn and France offered a nice trade deal and Gandi even made some positive comment about nuclear weapons. This all happened after I had started an unprovoked war and nuked every AI capital on the map. At least from my experience I'd say they don't get to upset about nukes.

I did not realize the AI would not nuke first. In previous games that had defensive "building" for defense against nukes, I did always build them fearing the AI would first strike me. SMAC they would first strike you (called planetbusters in that game) iirc.

I'm okay with the MAD policy of AI not first striking. It makes sense from a realism standpoint, even if it hampers their gameplay. But perhaps the top 2 difficulty levels of AI could be allowed to first strike, I'd be okay with that.

AI first strike should be an option in the advanced setup screen.

I've never been nuked by another Civ, even after I've annihilated them with WMDs. However I've definitely seen AIs have nuclear wars with each other. Only reason I noticed was that India nuked an American city just next to my border and I got a tile of radiation.
On another game my explorer reached the 2nd continent, and found both civs there had spent the last however-many centuries in nuclear war. The whole continent was awash with radiation. Felt like a Fallout game
